Just a little bit wrong...

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
As a writer I never listed to the folks who were 'cruel to be kind' in terms on crit on stories. if they wanted me to listen, they had to be intelligent about what they were saying, and could give me some examples from their own writing to help me improve my own.

If they didn't, or refused to give any real writing examples themselves then I just shut them off. I aim to learn, not to be harshly judged with no bases for improvement.

It was like this in the DAZ art community as well, the harshest critics of other peoples work, they never, ever, made any art themselves. They couldn't beat down the specter of their own perfectionism and just 'create'.

We only get one shot at this life people, do your best, but never feel like your not 'good enough' to write, or draw, or to make art.

Creativity is a gateway to the soul.

People don't have to provide their personal qualifications in order to critique someone's work.

Avid consumers who know the medium are just as capable of offering valid critiques as those who produce works in the medium. Those "consumer" critics offer criticism by comparing your work to the genre and excellent examples of the genre, by examining your plot and themes and seeing how well, if at all, you resolved the conflict, explored the themes, etc. In fanfiction, they can also compare your work canon to see if you kept the characters true to their canon selves.

Criticism is highly subjective (except for, maybe, grammatical issues), so you can also take someone's advice with a grain of salt, even the advice your peers.

So no, I don't have to provide my references in order to leave anything but glowing praise on your fic.

I don't know what you consider harsh criticism, but if you shut down someone who left serious critique and not just a flame because they couldn't provide writing examples of their own work, I'd say that's pretty shortsighted and immature.

Never said I wanted glowing praise. But there is a certain contingent of 'critics' that revel in being complete and utter jackasses to anyone who isn't in their narrow definition of 'perfect'.

I blame them really for halting allot of creativity in people, and generally causing allot of 'unfun' in many fandoms.

It's needlessness in it's hostility, and completely unnecessary. This is famdom, not reality TV.

So yes if someone is a persistent asshole, I'm going to what to see what they did, and how good they are at something.

...I swear I'm getting to old for this...
