That's the kind of thing that sounds a whole lot better in theory than in reality. In reality, it sucks a hell of a lot of drama and reward out of a game if the main character is such a heartless prick he/she doesn't give two fucks about any of people who are fighting and dying beside him and for him. Having Squall go "whatever" would take him from kick-ass hero to worthless amoral asshole in two syllables. At least in my eyes.
