Nope, it's fucking creepy because random strangers propose reading your kinky depraved porn out loud and recording it like the whole endeavor is an exciting collaborative activity between the two of you, and there's very very few ways to react to that without seeming sour or mean. The best way is smiling and nodding and secretly backing away.

The fourth wall should stay in place even when it comes to fanfic writers. The end.

And the only reason that's uncomfortable is if one is uncomfortable with fic or uncomfortable with porn, on some level

lol though.

Yes, because reading kinky depraved porn aloud is so much worse than writing it or reading it yourself.

And you know what, if you're uncomfortable with someone reading your porn? Say no. It's not a big deal.

Also, not all podfic is porn, same way not all fic is porny.

And as a writer of fanfic, both porny and non-porny, I have to point out that not all explicit fanfic is kinky, and most of it certainly isn't depraved.

Are you ashamed of your kinky depraved porn? Is it creepy when you get comments saying "I liked this!" on your fic? Does it deeply unnerve you that people like reading what you've written?

Most podficcers I know don't expect collaboration. We just want to be able to share your fic, which we loved, with other people in our own way. You are under no obligation to interact beyond saying YES or NO to permission requests. And if you put up a permission statement on your masterlist or profile (either, "I'm not a fan of podfic, but you're welcome to record my stories if that's your thing" or "please don't record podfic of my stories") you will not have to interact with podficcers at all. There's your intact fourth wall. If you get a message saying "hey, I podficced this!" take it as if they'd said "I recced your fic" and move on.

Podfic is not the medium for everyone. It's okay not to like it. But calling it creepy is rude to people who enjoy it and ESPECIALLY rude to people who make it. Stop judging, please. It's fine not to be a fan. Just kindly don't be a jerk about it.

I don't see recording as a collaboration with the author, especially not when the author is a liar who prefers to nod and smile to me like I'm a dangerous psychopath they have to back away from rather than honestly say something as simple as "I don't want my stories to be recorded." Just put it in your profiles / a sticky post and you'll be left in peace.

I... don't understand your fourth wall reference. If that's what bothers you, then I'm thinking this means you don't want people to read your porn at all, even less to leave you feedback. And if you're not a writer, then I guess you don't read porn and don't leave feedback. Because that kind of explanation for why podfic is creepy makes pretty much no sense otherwise.

That being said, podfic is not for everyone, just like porn isn't, fanfic isn't, chocolate isn't... but laughing at people who love any of those things by implicitly calling them creeps is a bit rude, I think.

Hmm, ten days after this post was laid to rest, one random comment generates 15+ responses in less than an hour. I wonder if this could have POSSIBLY have been linked anywhere. A podfic community, perhaps? nahhhhh

Listen, folks, you can try to argue that what you're doing is "an art form" all you like, but the painful truth of it is that the GREAT majority of smutfic writers I know (and I'm talking smutfic here specifically) find a stranger eager to add an uncomfortably intimate element, that being their human voice, to said author's id fic, which breeds best in the dark, incredibly embarrassing and creepy. They pay lip service to the requests, which are again intrinsically uncomfortable in a way that a text comment just isn't, and afterwards nod with the internet's equivalence of a frozen smile at the links given to them with the expectation of listening and approval.

What are these list terminologies you are throwing at me? Is this supposed to be common knowledge? Besides, it wouldn't matter. No one wants to seem like an asshole when a socially inept person comes rushing in begging to read your mpreg AU out loud, for one, and no one wants to have more contact with these people than they have to, for another. Shit is creepy.

Also, I'm sorry. Podfic is not an art form, it's reading shit into your laptop's microphone. Useful, certainly, but not an art form. Unless you're Ian McKellan masterfully making use of your classical voice training to bring the material to life it never had before, please stop with the oppression delusion. It continues the theme of podfic and podficcers being embarrassing as hell.

Well, now, come at me, as I suppose you must. The truth hurts and I guess you have to take it out on SOMEONE.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-08 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
This is like saying any type of amateur art is not an artform. Why can it not be likely that a podficcer might one day be a professional audio book voice? Not all of them are celebrity. And that's saying that no podficcers have any training, or that they don't put any effort into their work like revisions, rereads, editing, etc. It is a performance, much like acting, that people improve with time and practice, and use elements to make enjoyable. They translate ideas into different media to be shared and enjoyed. If that's not art, I don't really know what is.

Adding to that, I would venture to say that by your definition of art, that all fanfic isn't an art. We're not masters of prose like Voltaire or Shakespeare or, whoever, so obviously it's useful but not art an therefore is creepy. And it might be, you might think that, but that is not the point.

Your viewpoint that all smut writers (because oh, ho, the ones you know agree with you) think that podficcing is creepy, is the absolute truth is just dead wrong.

You are maligning an entire section of fandom by touting your viewpoint as the truth. It is an opinion. And if you do not want to interact with podficcers, just say you don't want a reading. It is not the nicer thing to do to put on a fake smile and go with it.

I think, if you really thought that podfic was creepy, that you really disliked it, you wouldn't even entertain people wanting to podfic your work. I'm going to assume (and yes that is assume) that you or the people you know who have this experience of "slowly backing away" from a podfic request actually just like the attention and the thought that their work is deemed interesting enough to be read and enjoyed as another aspect of fandom.

Your actions are contradictory to your viewpoint. I suggest you deal with podficcing requests like a reasonable adult, instead of shaming a section of fandom because you don't like it.

It's ok if you don't like it. Don't participate in it. But don't shame it, and don't spout your view as if it is the truth. You wouldn't want someone to do that to your fandom kink, or your writing, or anything you participate in and enjoy, would you?

[Same anon as above]

I think that the "oppression delusion" applies to all aspects of fandom and fandom shaming. There is not a single person in fandom that wants something they enjoy bashes. Is it hard to request that people who do not like something to simply ignore and not participate? I'm not a podficcer... yet. I'm not going to say I never will be. I'm a writer, and you do not speak for me. I personally know just as many writers who enjoy podfic & listen to podfic as you probably do who don't enjoy it.

It is not creepy to me. So please. Just stop speaking for an entire section of people. It is your opinion and nothing more.

No thanks. I'd rather not be bothered or approached at all. And shouldn't the default be NOT to podfic unless authors specifically seek out this contract to sign off their approval or whatever?

You guys seem very sensitive to the unfortunate truth that the unwanted intimacy and secondhand embarrassment endemic to podfic is infamously dnw'd and mocked throughout the fanfic-writing world. I'm sorry no one has seen fit to tell you this before, but I guess the hivemind descending upon the bearer of bad news can be a deterrent. And again, no one wants to seem like a dick. Luckily I was born without this affliction.

Your insistence that you're some guild-like creative community doesn't help, either. Reading someone's else's fanfic out loud is not equivalent to writing fanfic, or drawing fanart, or any of the other silly crap us fans do. It can be helpful for people who want to listen to shit on their ipods but it's p. much as creative as making animated gifs. The delusion of importance and respectability is nagl.

Then again, Tumblr watermarks their 1 mb shitty half-moving gifs like they're speshul works of art, too, so this is all probably a tragedy that internet 4.0 will never escape.

LOL.

you're funny.

And dude, I don't feel oppressed. I'm gonna go right back to podficcing happily and not worry about you at all. I'm no more ashamed of doing what I do than you are about being a dick. :-)
