okay... but who the fuck is this?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Gloria Steinem.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Finding someone boring can have nothing has nothing to do with a person's gender. It's because of things like speaking ability and topics and pacing. You are not less of a feminist because you found a woman speaking in public or on tv boring. I have never heard Gloria before. Maybe she is one of those people who is a brilliant writer but a mediocre public speaker. It happens. I've read biographies about actors who are awesome on stage, but bad at being entertaining off it.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's that she's a woman, I think it's that she's a very famous figure in the feminist movement. If somebody's disappointed with a big figure in their movement, they're probably going to feel like they're not a good whatevermovementist. I don't think her gender has much to do with OP's concerns, besides in how it relates to what Gloria's doing politically and what OP believes in.

*shrug* Not everyone is a good speechwriter and public speaker.

Is this an OpenID thing, or all over DW? I know that I can't post links or images due ot being OpenID.

I can post images but not videos, and I'm not using openid, so I'm pretty sure it's at least on Fandomsecrets. You can post them on your own posts, so I'm not sure, but it's clear I can't do it on F!S anymore.

Writing and public speaking are two separate skill groups. Sorry your idol wasn't the best public speaker, but I hope you don't think worse of her for this. You got to see that she's a human being with failings as well as talents. If you've taken her off of a pedestal, maybe you can sit her in a comfy chair in your mind instead.

Awww, really? That's a shame. But I guess you can respect the overall work without necessarily adoring the person. I think she'd say the group efforts are more important than the individual, anyway.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
So what? Not everyone's a good public speaker. Doesn't make their ideas any less important... Hell, some people I won't name are famous for ideas they cannot express well neither in writing or in speech!

I'd find it far more disappointing if I went to see someone like her speak, she'd suck, and I/my friends would be butthurt about acknowledging it. Our heroes are "allowed" their flaws... Insisting they're perfect makes us dumb, unthinking followers.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
You said that you've been a big fan of hers for years. Could I be that you were bored because you'd already heard everything she's said before?

I've had that happen. I'll read a bunch of interviews and other things of someone I admire and then when I see them give a speech, I'll be disappointed because they were same anecdotes and themes. It doesn't mean what they say isn't important or won't be life-changing for someone who's hearing it for the first time.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
*"I" should be "it"

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Well that's what happens when you place ridiculous expectations on someone that they could never possibly meet.

I saw her speak when I was an undergrad about 15 years ago, and she was phenomenal. But I didn't know anything at all about her or feminism proper, and the message was new. I wonder if it's what a commenter above me says, that you are so familiar with her message that she didn't say anything new to wow you?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's important we cut Ms. Steinhem a break here too- she is 78 years old now!

[personal profile] lunabee34 2012-07-02 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods nods*

I imagine I will not be as amazing as she is at 78. :)

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I've had this happen if I've known too much about someone's work, because inevitably they just regurgitate the stuff you've already read. You can't expect her to come up with shiny new ideas.

I also think that celebrities are often just a bit dull in real life because they are just ordinary people, and it's easy to forget that. It's why there's no point meeting your heroes. If you meet them because you have mutual friends, and are introduced at a dinner party or something, you might love them, but as a fan, you are only going to get their public persona, which may not be what you would like.
