What are some things you have experienced that have led you to this opinion?

What fandom are you in? In every fan circle I've hung out in, the artists are always just as fun as the rest of the group. I've seen a lot of them offering to do fanart for fics and the only time they pitch a fit is when they have good reason: someone is stealing their work.

I wonder how much is 'insufferable douchebag' and how much is honest annoyance at "Hey, hey! You should draw more X. Hey, you should draw me this for free. Hey, hey, I draw almost as good as Chris-chan, art trade? Hey, why do you ship x/y? They suck, you should draw x/z instead. Hey, X character is dumb, you should draw Y. Hey, hey, you did once piece of fanart for X series back 7-8 years ago, you should draw more. Hey, you should do more fanart. I hate your original stuff. Hey, fanart is stupid and real artists only do original stuff. Ewww, het is icky. Ewww, slash is icky. Hey, you should have done.... it would look better if. Well I think... hey, hey hey!"

Also, add, "Hey, the characters from the book don't really look like that." (READ: You are not drawing them exactly how they are in my head. DRAW LIKE MY IMAGINATION!)

and god forbid you draw something innocent that turns out to be a very specific fetish. CRAZIES OUT OF THE WOODWORK.

Weird requests seem to increase the more fanart you do and the more you upload. urgh

And on the flipside, if you don't do fanart you won't get much feedback (unless you're doing insanely good art, the kind that gets featured).

I mean, wait, what?

The older artists in fandom aren't obnoxious. It's also probable that you're only talking to the *good* artists right? They probably do or want to do this sort of thing for a living, so it's a bit different from fanfiction- which while people that want to be writers can do, takes less specialized training since it's a skill taught in school. Not justifying the behavior, but a little snootiness is expected.

I think its usually it's the fans of the BNFs that get shitty, not the BNFs themselves.

at least, that's how it is in the Harry Potter fandom. There are basically two prominent artists, one for the bad guys and one for the good guys, and if you say anything that isn't pure worship towards either of them (and in some cases when you draw the same ships they draw) they rip you to shreds :(

There's some artists that are awesome and all around lovely, but there's also some douchebags out there. My favorites are the selfish cunts, those ones are really nice.

Demographics, size of the fandom, obscurity of the fandom, etc. — they all affect the level of... er, let's call it "level-headedness" of your average fan, plus the how much percentage there is of "vocal minority" obnoxious fans, etc.

There are plenty of nice and kind fanartists out there, anon. You can't base them all on the few you've dealt with.

What exactly is insufferable douche-baggery, I'd like to know? Are they actually jerks, or just don't want to draw what you want to see?

I'm an artist, and it's incredibly annoying when someone I don't even know tells me, "Will you draw me and my boyfriend/me with this character/these characters in this scenario/etc? I won't pay you, but you'd have my thanks!" I work full-time, and for me, art is my relaxation time: just because I can draw doesn't mean I want to spend all of my free time drawings things that don't make ME happy.
