I was suspicious of Black Widow myself before seeing Avengers (mostly because I didn't like how she and Pepper were portrayed in IM2) but once I saw the film, I thought she was a really great character, and she became my second favourite (Thor took first place in my heart, haha).
But I think this sort of confirmation bias is pretty understandable, both because (as you said) we've seen so many bad female characters over the years, and also that a lot of the trappings (clothes and looks, mostly) can be misleading.
