Do you mean that she wants to work as an actress despite having a rich husband? Because Megan doesn't seem to feel guilty about it.

I'm not sure why this is a secret... or even what the secret is? You feel bad or guilty for selling commissions when you don't really need the money?
Or are you considering quitting your day job and trying to make a living as an illustrator?

You can make commissions for charity OP! Instead of keeping the money, you can donate it to charities of your choice or of your customer's choice.

So you feel bad because you might be taking money from someone who actually needs it? That's understandable. You could get involved in the "draw for charity" stuff instead.

I don't think you need to feel like your taking business away from other artists... it seems like most people commission artists because they like that artist's style in particular. Look at all the people who commission the same ideas from different people. And there's no reason to feel bad about wanting to make a little extra money for yourself.

But, as others have said, doing it for charity is a good idea if you still feel bad about taking people's money.

You're wondering if you should stick with your job that you don't like that much or should follow your dreams like she did and do art for a living? That's what I'm getting from this secret.

Honestly, I wouldn't be able to tell you, op. I'd say try and do some art for people in your free time, and see if it catches on and you actually like making art for other people (doing fanart instead of your own creations can be very different things).

If people bought art by throwing money at random artists, I could understand not wanting to dilute the pool when others need the money more than you.

However...

People buy art because they like a particular piece, like the artist's style, or are just generally fans of the artist. As much as a lot of people like to support struggling artists, what art you buy ultimately comes down to what art you like and aesthetic taste has little to do with who needs the money more or who does this professionally and who does it as a hobby. If people like your art, they will buy it and they probably won't interrogate you about how much money you make.

You could always offer your work for cheap or, as was previously suggested, donate the profits to charity (maybe the art program at a local school?)

Okay, I do make art for a living. Not fanart, but a lot of commissions; got three in the lineup as I type this. These are what will pay next month's rent for me.

And I say that if you want to try selling your work, go for it. The pros can handle the competition, and as many people have pointed out, it's less competition than you might imagine, since individual tastes are so varied. If someone wants a painting by someone else, they're not going to buy mine even if that other painting disappears. If they want someone else's commission style, they won't pick me even if that other artist stops taking commissions. And the person who loves my work isn't going to commission someone else whose style doesn't appeal to them as much.

It's not like you're both selling iPods, you know?

Good luck, OP. <3
