ot: You know, I appreciate that the game was respectful and shit and wasn't all lewd disabled fetishism, but my god was a huge chunk of it murderously boring.

oh my god are we going to that fucking cafe AGAIN

WHY ARE WE FISHING WHO ARE THESE ASSHOLES

I HAVEN'T EVEN CLICKED A BUTTON IN 45 MINUTES

I didn't even finish it

(Anonymous) 2012-07-04 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
to be fair it is a visual novel.

and a lot of games in that genre have emphasis on the "novel" aspect, so you're not going to constantly be making choices to advance the story.

"clicked a button in 45 minutes?"

it's a vn not a choose your own adventure novel

(Anonymous) 2012-07-04 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
So I guess it was your first VN?

Were you on Shizune's path?

The rest of the game... is not that great when it comes to implementing the choices, to be honest, but Shizune's path is way different. There's only one choice on that whole path, and it's obvious which option leads to the bad end and which option leads to the good end. I think it's supposed to be symbolic of something, like how Shizune is a really controlling person and it's her that's making all the decisions about how the relationship goes, not you.

This really might not be the right game for you, but Shizune's path is not representative of the whole game and I think if you're even remotely interested in the rest of it, you should give one of the other paths a try. I recommend Emi or Rin! Emi's path was consistently interesting and funny, and Rin's is pretty good too.

If OP is here: what do you want the fandom to be, and what kind of things are you interested in?

I've thought the same thing a few times myself.

I haven't played it, only read about it, but if what I've heard is true, why did they have to add (optional) sex scenes?

I think the game would have earned more respect without them, and if what OP's secret about the fandom is true, it would have attracted better fans too.

Hm. Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I liked the sex. It wasn't really arousing to me, and it read more as "the characters are having sex and this is part of the story" than "this is porn for the viewer's arousal." The way it was drawn wasn't closeups of genitals, it was just... this is what's happening, okay. It wasn't always used effectively, but there were times that showing the sex helped the story out rather than weighing it down.

Going to try to be vague here, but on one path, the characters had sex when they were in a really bad place emotionally. It was depressing and a little worrying and it was supposed to be- one of them just wanted to feel something, and the other wanted to be connected in whatever way they could get. It was a really intense, desperate, awful moment, and I don't know if there would have been a better way than bad-idea-sex to show that. The sex scene on that path in the good end shows that they understand each other better and they can be close without having to go back to that dark place again. In another path, the main character can cheat on his girlfriend with another girl... and the way the relationship's been going, it's almost understandable if he does. The other girl's expression during the sex scene is soul-crushing if you've got any sympathy for her at all, and it shows better than anything that this really wasn't the answer and doesn't make anything better, not for the main character, and definitely not for the other girl. On yet another path, a character doesn't like the way they assume their partner sees them, so they initiate sex in order to prove in a very definite way that they're the kind of person who can. It's a huge shift, shocking, and awkward as fuck, but it's what that person wanted, and actually seeing it did more to show what they were trying to do. And on a lighter note, to finish it off, one of one character's sex scenes demonstrates a lot about their personality... through really funny bad sex.

Again, it was not always done well, and I think the writing could have been tightened up a lot even in the scenes that worked for me. But I think sex did have a purpose here, and it felt more honest than many "young people falling in love and figuring things out" stories that don't really deal with sex at all.

I see! I'm glad they weren't just tacked on. I was going by the reactions I've seen in various places to the game.

NAYRT

I will never, ever get over the scene in the shed. I'm so glad my partner doesn't have a penis, because if we ever tried to have sex and it was even a little bit similar, I would die laughing and never fuck again.

imo the sex scenes weren't really the creepy kind and they were fairly realistic and not fetishized or anything

and honestly, part of what was so refreshing about the game's attitude towards disability is that disabled people are JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, and part of that is that they have sex just like everyone else.

as a disabled person it's actually nice to have some form of media out there that treats sex with a disability as no big deal

I'm glad to hear they were done tastefully, then. :)

I've been going by the reactions I've seen on other sites, and many people were put off by the idea that maybe the sex was just playing up fetishes and by the vehemence of the fanbase itself.

actually a lot of 4chan users were put off by the fact that it WASN'T a disabled fetish pornfest. the saying goes around that they went in for the sex scenes but came out a better person.

A lot of mainstream game review sites compared the sex scenes to ones you'd find in a novel or R-rated movie- there to advance the story and characters, not titillate.

it helps that they did actual research and talked to disabled people and there were a few women on the dev team.

It was born on 4chan.

THIS GAME WAS BORN ON 4CHAN.

I'm surprised there weren't more porn scenes. But of course there was gonna be fucking, come on!

Though really, it's not "fucking" so much as "sex."

Creators are assholes who spammed image boards relentlessly about it when the first started, that alone means I'll never play it.

Not surprised the fandom is douchey, though. :[
