But OP how do you KNOW they aren't real any more than their stans know they are? People like to have romantic dreams - so what?

Fans believing in their "realness" doesn't make it true if it isn't true nor does your insistence it isn't true, make it false - just let people be. Don't sweat it. Their dreams are their business, mind your own dreams. If any of those real person couples is/was real and if they cho/ose not to go public with it, it's their right. They are not obligated to confirm or deny anything, lol.

Shipping real people, as in being excited imagining there's a big romance harms nobody - if stans get up in the faces of their "ideal" real couple and start trying to make them conform to their fantasy, that's when it becomes a problem.

Just spazzing with others, though and saying "OMG they held hands! They are so real!"? So what? :D

Dreams are good. Being a romantic and seeing love everywhere is good. ^_^

Yeah, I admit it, I ship real people, too. :D Just not the ones in the secret though, lol. My "real couple" just makes me feel happy when I know or can see that they are interacting and if they seem to be close to one another. ^_^

Not the OP but I completely agree with the secret. In fact, I was actually talking about exactly this in a tinychat the other night, so I'm wondering if I know the secret maker...

Yes, of course it's possible that there is a major conspiracy to hide their relationships with each other. Anything is possible and if either 'ship' is true, good for them! But that's not the point-- I'm pretty sure the OP was not trying to make it about RPS or about shipping in general.

This is a different situation. There ARE fans, a LOT of them, who take it too far in both of these fandoms. Fans who DO get up in the faces of the boys (and what's worse, their totally non-famous actual girlfriends!) and insist and cry and will not take "No, we aren't together" for an answer.

It's well beyond the point of shipping and fangirling, and it's terrifying. It was scary with Panic, and it's ten times worse with 1D.

AYRT

Ahh, I see now. I misunderstood and thought OP anon was saying all RP shipping shouldn't be done because s/he doesn't like it.

As I stated in my first post, I also think there is a line that must be respected and those who don't respect it are most definitely of some concern. I'm not down with harassing/bullying, at all.

I think someone below said "you have to acknowledge you're a silly fan girl" - umm yeah I do. :D It is fun to speculate, hope, imagine etc but I would never confuse that with reality.

But I reserve the right to spazz on occasion and declare (typically only to other like mindeds), "OMG did you see that? They are so real!" :D

not op, but
"if stans get up in the faces of their "ideal" real couple and start trying to make them conform to their fantasy, that's when it becomes a problem."
is exactly what the op is adressing, i think. 1D fandom is full of them.

exactly. when the fandom is BULLYING one of the member's younger sisters about his sexuality, they've absolutely crossed a line.

You say that you just ship RPF because it's fun and makes you happy, but I think OP is referring to shippers who will INSIST that their fantasies are the same as reality, and that x and y are actually dating/fucking.

What you do is fine with me, but I disagree that the more intense shipping is harmless fun. That's where it gets genuinely creepy, especially if it's about kids or people with families. Why is it so hard to just acknowledge it's all fun and fiction? Speculation is normal, RPF can be fun, but you gotta acknowledge you're being a silly fangirl.
