I used to be right there with the rest of society regarding incest, but I've slowly grown to having no problem with gay incest... except parent-child because of the power imbalance. But straight incest still revolts me as much as it ever did.

Lesser compared to what? You mean the chances are greater that there will be social stigma? I think infant mortality and debilitating genetic disorders are a bit more devastating than the disapproval of others, in the less likely event that they happen.

The probably of a freak baby outside of sustained and perpetual failure to branch your family tree is unlikely. The probability of an unequal relationship that seriously messes up one or more parties is fairly high.

Lesser compared to rape and/or prolonged abuse over the course of decades, depending on when the incest begins. Inbreeding can be avoided with a prudent application of birth control, mental and emotional damage, not so much.

The chance of having a flipper baby is equally increased in women having kids over thirty, from those with certain genetic histories, tight knit communities, etc.

They are a great ship, just brilliantly written in canon and there are a lot of amazing fic writers out there. I don't even like either character much and I'm not particuarly invested in the ship, but I definitely see the appeal.

Incest in fiction never hurt anybody. And there's a lot of incest in fiction since the Greeks so you know, you're not the only one fascinated/interested in that kind of relationships.

I don't mind incest between two consenting adults in fiction, and these two are pretty much my favorite pairing in the series because they're written so...great.

It's when people ship young sibling together beyond normal sibling love that bothers me. At least adults have sorted out their feelings and are less hormonal, you know?

I agree with the point about consenting adults in fiction. I personally find these two sickening together. Maybe it's because I have so many siblings, and I just have that instant revulsion at the very idea. (Because seriously, ew) They definitely have an interesting power dynamic though.

Younger siblings though, that's just a great big "No" for me. It's too much. When Cersei talks about how they screwed around together as kids, I'm just like "Oh god, no, just no"

The issue for me is that my mother was molested by her brother when she was a child. So there is incest in my family. Not consensual incest like this, but still incest (and sibling incest at that). I feel guilty not because I think there is anything wrong with writing it or reading it, but because I don't think I personally should be turned on by it or enjoy reading about it as a non-unhealthy relationship.

I think the important thing here really is the separation of fiction and reality. After all, it's a well-known phenomenon that people find things enjoyable in fiction that we find detestable in reality. Aristotle even says so in his Poetics, and it's over two thousand years old. It's not exactly a new thing!

There's also the fact that in fiction certain situations may work as symbols rather than, or as well as, the actual depicted events. As symbols (even subconsciously perceived) they can help us work through issues, or just have an outlet for an emotional need. Rape, for example, can (amongst a lot of other things) be a symbol of giving up control, for letting go of all responsibilities for a little while. It doesn't mean the reader actually wants to be raped.

But the most important thing I think you should remember is that these fictional characters aren't your family members. You're not imagining your family members doing these things.
