Friday Fandom Relections

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2012-07-06 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Today's topic is:

Things you love that have no fandom (that you can find). You'd love to see fic, art, etc., but the thing you love is maybe obscure, out of date, or not really conducive to a fandom environment. Whatever the reason, you'd love some interaction with other fans or to find some  fanworks, but you can't find much of anything or you can't find what you want.

Let's commiserate about the lack of love for the things we love.

For me, I'd love to see some Avengers style fic (the fun times at Stark Mansion ones) starring the puppets from the Puppet Master series. You know, all the puppets just chilling out, maxing, relaxing all cool and all shooting some b-ball outside of the school. Just the puppets being all awesome and adorable.

I just want a Charles Band fandom, period. Heck, I'd love a B-movie fandom. But, those sorts of things don't translate well to fandom.

Oh wow, where do I even start? There are so many things I like that no one else knows about... :(

^ This is my favourite non-supehero, non-manga comic book EVER, and I can't find a fandom for it anywhere because it's so obscure. It makes me sad, especially since I'm pretty sure that if a fandom did exist it would be awesome and not wank-y.

On another note, I kind of wish there was more fic for the Oz books. Especially Dorothy/Ozma slashfic.

On another another note, Mystery Men is a great movie and so far most of the people I have encountered in fandom have never heard of it.

The Wild North, a 1953 film starring Stewart Granger and Wendall Corey. One of the gayest things I've ever seen without being literally gay. The two characters spend much of the movie handcuffed together with one character calling the other "baby" half the time.

THIS SOUNDS AMAZING. I can't believe I haven't seen it already, seriously -- off to find download/DVD/whatever right away!

I would really like to see creative Pushing Daisies AUs, like for example a time travel setting where Ned is investigating important historical figures' death.

I wish shows from my country had a fandom :( A Bref or a Kaamelott fandom would be a goldmine of gifs.

There's an lj comm for Pushing Daisies. It's slow, but there's few posts now and then. (-:

Lots of stories from my childhood...mainly The Mistmantle Chronicles.

I also wonder about Cirque Du Freak fandoms, but I have a feeling that if I went looking I wouldn't like what I found.

hhhhhahahahhahaa oh cirque du freak fandom... I used to be in it way back in middle-school and to this day I have never found anything of quality in it (other than a few pieces of Steve/Darren art)

There is a novel called "City Of Thieves" that I passionately adore but no one seems to have read it. It's about the siege of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) and it's told in first person narrative following the adventures of two young men who have been sent on a ridiculous quest, by a military officer, which they have to complete if they want their ration cards returned. It's dramatic and emotional and heartbreaking and sometimes funny and you get sucked into the characters' lives and I can only find two pieces of fanart and no fic T.T

I wish there was a fandom for "A Rapier for Beatrice", a 1963 book, in which a young girl was kicking ass and taking names in 16th century France. Same for The Doors of Vannes, set in the Middle Ages.
Also, where's the love for The Hunchback (by Paul Feval)? (It's a revenge story, like The Count of Monte-Cristo, by the way)

There's just so many books I'd like to gush about...

Also, the Closer (the TV show) fandom is dreadfully small... Same for Blue Exorcist and Yotsuba...

This will get all my feels, I know it! *ahem* Okay...

Four Brothers: most of the fanfiction I've seen is Jack/OFC or Bobby/OFC (with the rare smattering of Angel or Jerry/OFC, and occasional intervention from OMCs). I wish it had a larger fanbase that simply appreciated all the characters in it, especially the brothers' dynamic. I'd rather never again see fanfiction titled Four Brothers and a Sister (unless it's a crossover, maybe). I feel like fellow Supernatural fans would dig this (2005) movie.

The Dark is Rising Sequence: one of my first fandoms. Well, okay, it's a children's book series, and I wrote for it as a child, so I get why there might not be interest. I never fell out of love with the characters, though, and I'm still waiting for the one perfect story where grown up!Bran realizes he's King Arthur's son and gets a second chance.

Soukyuu no Fafner: I haven't read manga or watched anime in a while, but this was one of the loveliest series I ever watched. The relationships were complex and tragic. Two particular scenes in it and its spin off wrenched my heart out of my ribs. I hardly ever cry watching stuff, but this made me. I heard there might be a sequel in the works, too, where Kazuki and Soushi might finally be reunited.

Final Fantasy Tactics: this was one of the best Final Fantasies I've ever played and I've played almost all of them. I think it gets written off for being a spinoff and a tactical RPG (not to mention the Tactics Advance series, which fell short, tbh), but wow, it's good. I've played the original PSX game AND War of the Lions. For all those slashers who love Cloud/Sephiroth or whatever (as I do, too), no relationship in the FF games can beat the beautiful, tragic, twisted nature of Delita and Ramza's. I actually thought they'd come right out and be overt about it, but they never did.

I have more, but I've raved enough, so I'll go now. >.<

Where's the fic of canon Warcraft characters? I came from JRPG fandom and Illidan/Kael'thas and Thassarian/Koltira are exactly the kind of ships that get obsessed over by yaoi fans. I'm always seeing things that would have totally set me off when I was a wee teenage yaoi fangirl. I just find it really odd since everyone and their dog has played WoW but yet the canon fandom is so small.

(When I say canon, I mean Heroes and NPCs as opposed to PCs. Books and comics and the RPG sourcebook count as canon.)

I'd love to find any independent (keyword: INDEPENDENT) fanfic or fanart of Drama Drama Duck but all I can search for is a few old fanarts on DeviantArt. The thought of someone drawing Darcy racing around using Knock Out or Ai Haibara going around dimensions while her lab was fixed keeps being in my mind all day and night.

*sigh* Well, at least their canons have something for me to look for.

I'd love to see a more fic-based fandom for Japanese female idols. There is a great fandom for discussion and sharing resources, but fic is hard to find and what exists is cute but bland. It is a male-dominated fandom and the output reflects that.

I'd also love to see fic about t.A.T.u., but I think by now that will not exist, since the band broke up.

The big one: Mahou Tsukai Tai! (aka Magic Users' Club in the US). Fantastic OVA followed by a decent one-season show. The dub didn't suck. And yet, the fandom was tiny when it was first released here and then died almost immediately when it finished. There's perhaps one or two fics on AO3 and they're about a decade old (presumably they were backdated on upload). Where's the love?

The ones nobody remembers: Max Headroom (the US version) and Misfits of Science. Awesome shows treated dreadfully by the networks, and both pre-internet, so what fic was written moulders in '80s 'zines in someone's closet. Where I can't get at it. Grr.

Others: But I'm a Cheerleader (what, no love for canon femslash?), Princess Nine (well, it's almost canon in this one), Real Genius, Short Circuit, Still Crazy, and The Boat That Rocked (Pirate Radio in the US). Very, very occasionally we get a fic or two for these at Yuletide, but otherwise - nothing. Makes me pout, it does.

In short: with maybe four exceptions, all my fandoms are tiny and get very little love, and it just makes me sad all over the place.

I'd love to find other fans of Mirai-keisatsu Urashiman. Or (Future Police) Urashiman, or Rock'n'Cop (as it was called in Germany). Fanfiction or art would be awesome, but finding other fans would at least be a start.

Yeah, the style is old, but the characters are all so interesting. The music and voice actors are great - at least the Japanese and the German ones, haven't tried the English version yet.

Future Boy Conan needs an English speaking fandom.
It's hands down the best anime I have ever seen and it's Miyazaki (and nothing like his movies, way better actually) yet people STILL have not seen it.* What. The fuck.

* Except in Japan and some Arabic-speaking countries where it apparently aired on tv
