NA: Oh! Thank you for articulating exactly how I've been feeling about the show. There was something I couldn't quite put my finger on about the tone of the show that I felt was. . .weird and this was exactly it. It's like they had this big war and grand plotline (that seemed like it was going to be AWESOME) but then OMG THINK OF THE CHILDREN LET'S ADD AN UNNECESSARY LOVE TRIANGLE. I am not trying to start a shipping war, and I'm not a shipper in general (like, I REALLY don't care who ends up with who, as long as there's some ass kicking going on), but the group dynamic would have been way better if they had just let Mako and Asami date and then Korra was just friends with Mako, Asami, and Bolin. I don't know why Korra even NEEDED a love interest (especially inside of team Avatar), except for the sake of unnecessary tension. People, there is a WAR GOING ON. That is plenty enough tension, unnecessary rivalries and petty love interest thingies are just distracting from the big themes!

I agree with you so much =/

I don't mind love triangles etc. but the one on the show seemed really forced to me. Plus I found Korra really lacking in priorities. I mean sure you can't control when/with whom you fall in love but I think it's safe to assume that an average 17 year old would still realize that the war going on might be more important than his/her love problems. Especially when she's supposed to be the Avatar and supposed to have been trained for shit like that.

They had a really great start and the plot idea was genious but they shied away from the big issues and left everything one-dimensional. What I find sad is that it was such a great chance to show children how the world actually works in terms of politics and conflicts in a way that was understandable but they just didn't follow through =/

I read a good summary of the issue of LoK vs. AtLa that i agree with (paraphrasing):

AtLA was essentially a show about children that balanced more mature and complex themes within the framework of a children's narrative

Legend of Korra is about much more mature and complex themes but handled its politics and relationships with a bluntness and lack of real depth
