Now, I love Bolin. The kid is adorable as hell. But...he is shittily written, as you put it. His only purpose is to spout cutesy oneliners and mug the camera. That's it. Yet he's loved, despite that.

All the hate comes from the almost insane love affair the fandom has with Asami. Had Mako never dated Asami I guarantee he would not be hated NEAR as much as he is now.

But hey, I'm sure the fandom wouldn't embrace a boy who forced himself onto a confused girl character. And then he had a plot device that made him not have to sacrifice anything and get the girl who was confused only a few episodes before. With no resolution for his selfish behavior...Oh, wait.

That's probably because he's not written as "taking names, breaking hearts, root for me!"

What DOES irritate me about Mako dislike is saying that he has no development at all (outside of Makorra - because inside of it, yeah, where is it.). He's developed as someone lots of people don't like, but it is development.

But that's not shitty writing, that's a comic relief for you. The show never tried to make anything other of him and most of all they didn't pull his crush on Korra out of their asses, it was hinted at from the beginning.

And it's not all about Asami, don't fool yourself. A lot of the love she got when the whole triangle shit started was a kneejerk reaction because she was treated so poorly. She actually did turn out pretty badass in the end (namely calling out Mako, not taking it out on Korra and taking it with a shitton of grace when Mako finally "broke up" with her), but before that she had next to no personality outside of "So good she defies her own father".

Also I'm not sure what that last sentence is about, a lot of people criticised that?

Also, was I the only one who didn't have any fucking idea that scene was supposed to be a breakup scene until afterwards?

I thought their breakup scene was supposed to be the "Sorry. I care about you." "I care about you too" part. Like they didn't need ~words~ because it was clear to both to them that it was over.

Or something.

Yeh, she backed down (or... stomped off madly. Way to try to fix things, Mako.), but they did have a lot else on their mind and she had that moment the other time where she jealously asked them why they had taken so long at the Equalist rally, like, a day before the supposed break up. (Which kind of made it all the more ridiculous how perfectly fine she was about the whole thing when Mako apologised to her. But hey, he apologised to her! Go away, Mako haters!)

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that was supposed to be the breakup scene. I just had no idea that's what it was - I thought they were making up/Mako was leading her on more/something else. It was kind of a wtf scene

I admit I love Bolin. He is a dork, or was a dork in the first 5 episodes. But like you said, after episode 5 he is placed in the background as """"comic relief"""" and we never hear or see him again. Unless he starts spouting nonsense/unfunny jokes at pretty random times.

Also, from what I've seen, most of the love for Asami came because of the whole lot of hate/bashing she was getting within fandom.

Had Mako never dated Asami, I would probably had found the whole Mako/Korra thing to be at least... cute? Decent? Idk but I would probably had shipped it or accept it as the canon pairing without complaining.

I think of the love triangle as the Black Hole: It sucked in any sort of personality and character development the characters had.

Well, yeah, but I don't think that's necessarily due to people stanning for Asami over Mako. If Mako hadn't dated Asami, there wouldn't have been a love triangle. If there hadn't been a love triangle, pre-hook-up Makorra moments wouldn't have induced lots of cringing and side-eyeing of Mako. Maybe we even could have had moments of Mako and Korra hanging out, enjoying each other's company, instead of relying on a recap to tell us Mako reciprocated Korra's crush. Mako wouldn't have been wrestling with his conflicted feelings over the two girls (and coming off as petty, shallow, and hypocritical in the process), because he'd have only one set of feelings to sort through (and personally, I think it would have been a more interesting version, especially if they went the route I've seen some Mako fans use to defend him -- that he's so hardened to trusting anyone after being the parent-figure to Bolin on the street for so long).
