When I got my vest I had to try it on first, and it had to be long enough to at least touch my belt and wide enough to overlap at the sides.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-07 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)I found my vest to be shorter in practice then it looked like it would be (like it falls just shy of the belt, with the actual protective material a couple inches higher), and it's still longer then basically any you see on tv.
Then again I'm pretty tall.

Yep, I'm pretty tall, too, but I never had a too small/too short vest and the kevlar went all the way down. I guess they get produced like that for the German police.
Or maybe people started to pay a lot more attention to protective gear because we had several shootings that ended with police officers dead around that time. Which doesn't happen all that often in Germany, so it was quite the cause for alarm.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-07 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)Only six months in here (ignoring training, obvs), and I'm loving the hell out of it, but we'll see how long the luster lasts. Need to make it two years to get a shot as DC - which theoretically is what I've wanted to make my career (trained to be an RAF intelligence officer but got dropped on medical grounds shortly before finishing training, and this is really the only other option for this type of work outside the SIS/SS).
Got the dubious honour of getting attached straight to a response team, when all my mates ended up on Neighbourhood Teams, and Street Patrol, which was sort of ironic given I'm after the paper work side and hardly the most masculine guy, but I've found out I'm really good at it.
Safety has never been a huge priority here given we've only had a tiny number killed in the line of duty, and we made it through the riots completely unscratched, so I guess they're not taking it as seriously as they might, but just needs one bad incident and they'll reverse all that though.
Don't your forces have a really weird career development structure though? I had relatives in the forces over there, and recall you had like three streams, and all the problems inherent in that? Could easily see getting frustrated by that kind of set up.

It was two streams at first and less of a problem for those who were already part of the forces. Problem was the old system was very unattractive to newcomers, and career advancement was really slow. You had to go through lots of lower ranks to reach something middle ranked like police inspector - and that with low pay compared to the risks.
So they decided to intoduce a new stream, which was part academic studies and part police training, and after finishing all that you already were police inspector - skipping the lower ranks. That was great and got a lot of new interest - and a lot of frustration for the others, who now had to wait even longer to advance to higher ranks.
