Yeah, the novel almost seemed to get bogged down is so many sideplots and extra characters while the musical stuck to the main story and the main characters. Simplified but it works much better for the musical than for the book.

Exactly this. I get that people are big fans of the novel, but I just don't see the appeal. I don't see it as particularly beautiful, either. It was just...jarring, really. Big long set up with the parents. BAM. Now we're at school. Enjoying the school scenes? BAM. Sex with a tiger and Everything Changes. And...I don't know. The relationships felt forced (seriously, I had no idea she was interested in Fiyero until they started having sex) and the sex was kind of pointless. It just felt like it tried too hard, and confused "complicated" for "complex."

musical!Fiyero is so infinitely a better character than book!Fiyero (and I actually liked that part of the book when I read it).

Pretty much agree with everything said here. The book is okay and interesting but the musical tightens things up better and this is why I like it better. And itt is also why a movie adaptation of it would work better, because less changes would have to be made (just drop a few songs or so).

I still sort of hope for the animated movie pitch to gain traction so that we could have the original Broadway cast back for the movie, since they are a bit too old now to really pull off live-action.

Could they get everyone to do it? I was under the impression that Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth hated each other now...then again, they did agree to both be on episodes of "Glee" as long as they didn't have to see each other.

Besides, they could record their parts for an animated movie without ever having to see each other, until it came time to promote.
