I can't write women anymore because fandom feminism has basically taught me that no matter how you write a female character, you will get shit for it. When you write male characters, people will only judge them as characters. When you write female characters, everyone will only look at how you wrote "a female character". Basically they've achieved the opposite of what they wanted to achieve.

This wouldn't be a problem if there were more female characters (of all kinds and types) represented in mainstream media, on film and television. No-one would pay so much attention if a character's creator fucks up or does it right, because they'd be held to the same standards as male characters.
Books on the other hand, are doing pretty well imo.

Got any recs? I could use some more books with lots of non-awful female characters.

Anything by Tanith Lee (except Heroine of the World, which was bizarre even for Lee's standards). Lee writes YA, horror, dark romance, science fiction, fantasy...I'm sure you'd be able to find something from her that you'd enjoy. My personal favorites are The Silver Metal Lover (which may be out of print), The Unicorn Trilogy, The Flat Earth Series (though only the last of that series actually has a regular female character). Her collected short stories of fairy tales, Tales from the Sisters Grimmer and Red as Blood have a lot of female characters, obviously.

I really liked HotW, though the character frustrated me quiet a bit.
But i second this rec - Tanith Lee is awesome.
loki: Loki, Alberich & Odin (palms)

Awwwww, Tanith Lee is fucking great.

My fave from her are the Claidi Journals (Law of the Wolf Tower etc). So beautifully atmospheric.

This was shown to me recently, although I can't tell at a glance if there's anything over young adult books.

Tried Tamora Pierce and Alanna/Dhana?
I'm not sure about Alanna but in Dhana we have lots of awesome female characters *sheepish*

Any specific genre you're looking for?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-11 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Sci-fi and historical fiction! Sorry it took me so long to reply to this. I'm such a dweeb.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Cry me a river. The portrayal of women in entertainment is still a major issue. Maybe you should do us all a favor and stop writing until we reach the post-feminist utopia where fictional women of all varieties are widely represented.

Did someone piss in your Cheerios this morning?

[personal profile] intrigueing 2012-07-10 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, this is a looooong shot, but did you by any chance get the "piss in your Cheerios" line from that pre-Legend of Korra wank that was posted on fandom_wank, where the one Zutaran was complaining that by making it canon that Aang and Katara stayed together and had kids and were endgame after ATLA ended, it was like Bryke was pissing in their Cheerios because before LoK, they could pretend that Katara and Aang broke up sometime after the end of ATLA?

Just a wild guess? :)

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure that line is much, much older than that. I've heard that line in rl, so I doubt that's where other nonny got it from. Also whoa specific wank.

[personal profile] intrigueing 2012-07-10 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I didn't know that phrase was in widespread use, huh. I just saw the line and flashed back to that wank and went OMG and just had to ask on the off-chance :D

Okay I have no idea what's going on but I swear every time I look away from your icon Tony moves his jaw and whenever I look back he just looks up innocently until my eyes hurt from staring.

He's trolling you. Stop paying attention to him. He's a filthy little attention whore. He'll stop if you make it clear you think his teasing is boring and stupid :D

/nope not a gif. maybe rdj's facial expressions are so awesome he can make it so that even still images of them move.

Try to make an Asami like character. She's pretty much Jesus in the Korra fandom, lol

I can't write women anymore because fandom feminism has basically taught me that no matter how you write a female character, you will get shit for it.

Stop caring so much about what people think and just write whatever works for you
