Wait, did someone raceswap 'The Social Network'? Which was based on... actual people? How... I don't... you know what, never mind.

Which was based on... actual people?

Why not? The movie 21 race swapped most of the actual Asian people involved to make them White. And A Beautiful Mind made Nash's Latina wife into... well, Jennifer Connelly.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah and I think everyone can agree that's pretty stupid, so I don't see why this would be any different.

Really? If "everyone" can agree it's stupid, why does Hollywood keep doing it?

So the solution is to keep doing it but by swapping minorities for white characters?

Not following this logic.

Except there's a difference between fans talking about a movie that's already been made and having fun by casting the people as POC, and Hollywood actually taking the stories of real, still living Asians and Latinos and putting White people in the roles.

Would it be ok if I took a movie with an entirely black cast and swapped the actors with white ones for "fun"?

I mean I generally think raceswapping a movie is ok for fun but it's sort of stupid and ridiculous with something like The Social Network that's based on real events where the characters are representations of real people.

Why not just support a minority filmmakers and entertainers? That would be better but it requires money and effort oops

That is not equivalent at all and it's hilarious that you think it is.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
No one really cares what you do, but it seems pointless since the majority of movies have white casts already. It's really not the same thibg

"majority of movies"

Even Bollywood films? They make more movie than Americans do IIRC

I know you meant in the West but yeah

Raceswapping is still annoying, I'd rather just support minority directors and producers (eg http://youtu.be/watjO62NrVg) instead of trying to look good on the internet and score brownie points with annoying middle class college students

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
When I found out what they did in 21 I was so disappointed, especially because it looked like they tried to make it "better" by having two Asian people in the group... but those two were the silly comedic relief roles.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I actually know the person who did that raceswap and she's an obnoxious white girl who's been overcompensating and trying to prove how ~progressive~ she is ever since someone once called her out on being a little bit racist. If the OP follows her, I can totally understand the anger behind this secret, because everything about the chick who did that Social Network one is pandering and awful.

~ another POC

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
How about educating her? How about telling her that 'pandering' is unnecessary and offensive?

You do realize that she may have ended up that way due to the bullying that the SJW's inflict on someone who makes even the smallest mistake.

I'm POC, but to them I'm 'white ideifying', 'straight ideifying' and other foolish terms due to the fact that I don't conform to any gay or POC stereotype.

As a white person on the net she's dammed if she doesn't, and dammed if she does.

...and honestly? it's not right.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-12 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

Also, I find it ridiculous that SJWs find it appropriate to try and educate minorities on how they SHOULD be acting according to their arbitrary rules on how ~all minorities act if they're a REAL minority~. LGBT/ethnic/survivor/trans*? Dissenting opinion? Self-hating!

Divya Narendra was played by an actor who is not Indian, so his fan casting here is actually correcting a race swap.

Yeah, I was about to say I'm surprised I haven't seen more fancasts based on correcting the whitewash casting. But I guess that wasn't really the point of the one used as an example.

There was a good whitewash correcting Last Airbender one going around a few weeks ago.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-11 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
