Like... I'm white so I can't really speak directly to race, but to put it in the context of something I do know firsthand, at the risk of the analogy fitting imperfectly:
Let's say I saw a fanwork that portrayed disability in a way where I felt the writer was just trying to "do disability right" and the characters felt artificial to me.
If the person seemed to be all "I'm Aware Of Disability Issues, See How Good I Am!" I'd wince. But if the person said something like "I never knew this stuff mattered until recently, but it really made a big impression on me when someone told me about it, and I wanted to try to get things right in my fic so I did this" I'd be much more sympathetic.
The "tryhard" would be the person who's looking for brownie points. The sincere ally who's hewing a bit too close to the Official Line and maybe sounding a bit fake but actually trying would be the actual awesome person who actually gets the points for having earned them.
