Agreed. I started out (in fanfic, not original fic) writing just slash, because it's what everyone around me wrote and the male characters were always the ones doing interesting stuff. It took me a while to be able to write (and appreciate!) female characters, but now it's strange to think of writing a fic without them. Everyone reacts differently to living in a misogynist culture and I think it's great you're finding a way out of it that works for you.
