Spoilers for Son of a Witch and Out of Oz

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
In Son of a Witch, Liir (main character) gets raped by Candle (she sleeps with him while he is in a coma because she thinks she can help him that way, but by all definitions, this counts as rape and considering Liir's reaction to being told about it, he definitely regards it as such as well). There is also no sign of him being in any way in love with her. Anyway, she got pregnant during that rape, basically emotionally pressures him to take responsibility because he is the father and in the end abandons her daughter for him to find and care for. He also has a male LI in that book, but it doesn't work out.

In the last book, they are married and he seems to be completely in love with her and nothing is ever again mentioned about the fact she raped him and he was very much NOT okay with that.

I won't disagree with you about the rape part, though it seems she did it to save his life, but Candle didn't pressure Liir to take responsibility for the kid. She even tells him at one point that he doesn't have to, though she refuses to abort it. Her line: "Liir, I ask nothing of you. You're not married to me. You didn't choose me. I didn't choose you."

Additionally she leaves the daughter at the end of the second book because army men were coming to the farm they were hiding at and she left to pull their attention away from the farm and onto her. She was SAVING her daughter by doing so. Candle is able to see the present so she knew Liir was heading that way. She hoped he would find the baby and take care of it while she lead the army men away. It's mentioned in later books that she came back once she either lost the army men or they let her go when she had no good information to provide (can't remember which one it was, think it was in the fourth book that they went into depth about it and I don't own that one).

I think Liir did have some feelings for Candle but those feelings stemmed more from gratitude of her saving him, the desire for a companion, and circumstance. Truthfully I think he wanted to be with Trism. At the end of the last book Candle and him end up splitting up and the one most upset about it is their daughter. But honestly Maguire sucks at writing romance. The relationship I found the most endearing was the Lion and Nor for God's sake and Nor was irreparable damaged from everything that had happened to her and the Lion was...well, the Lion.
