This is going up on my wall, oh yes. Now I can't fail, because I cannot disappoint the Bat man.

Well, you don't have to be good at math (if you're willing to work at it), but I don't recommend doing physics at uni unless you enjoy maths or at least find it interesting, because you'll be spending a lot of time doing it...

Shit, that wasn't meant to be a reply, but for the OP. Sorry.

Yup. Took an astronomy class in high school that claimed to be "non-mathematical."

Found out the hard way that there ain't no such critter.

yeah, same with my astronomy class in uni. Which is sad, because as a kid I'd dreamed of being an astrophysicist.
Yeah. That didn't happen.

I originally studied astrophysics at college because Stargate made it look cool, ngl. Samantha Carter LIED to me. I switched to applied physics though and it's pretty cool, I just suck at it. I think it's just that astronomy sort of sucks unless you're REALLY into it.

LOL I got the idea from reading Madeleine L'Engle as a child, actually.
But yeah, I just didn't have the skillset for it. Applied physics sounds cool and brainy though!

I'm bad at math too. Somehow I'm making it through c: I believe in you!!!

oh, i feel you anon. i find you don't necessarily have to be gifted at math, just willing to work hard

I'm so glad you found inspiration to work hard at a career that you believe will fulfill you. The world needs more scientists, and it's really cool that you're jumping in even though you know it will be hard.

My thoughts on math: I know lots of people (myself included) in science and engineering who worried they were too stupid to do math/would never improve at math/were inherently bad at math, but through hard work many of them (again, myself included) went on to pass their math classes and, in some cases, even pass their math classes at the top of the class. Math is about work and about accepting that it's going to be hard work that's going to take a lot of time and you either fight that or you accept it and do well. If you're willing to work for it, you'll do fine.

Lots of people in physics aren't great at math. My E&M prof failed Calculus II and Linear Algebra. That always made me feel better. I'm not the greatest at math, either (never failed anything, but I'm kind of average), and I thought it would hold me back before I realized lots of physicists suffered through math as much as me.

oh I suddenly feel so much better, because I'm due to repeat both those at the end of the summer.

I applaud your determination and spirit! With an attitude like that, as long as you put in the work I think you'll be fine. Your passion about the subject should make the work worth it, I think.

THIS ALWAYS WORKS. Yes. <3

I really want to improve at math, otherwise even considering science courses will murder me. I'm just going to appropriate your motivation :)

I get inspired by Batman too! I like to put up this image (http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m6yzv5T7e71qzdiiv.jpg) on my computer while I'm working (I'm an art student, so it fits). Good luck, and I hope you can study physics and astronomy!

Well, physics and maths are pretty intertwined, but there's other sorts of astronomy that don't need a huuuuge amount. Or, at least, not as much as astrophysics - all astronomy is going to have some maths in it, unfortunately.

For instance - how about planetary science? It still has maths in it, sure, but one of the better routes for planetary science is via geology (or, if astrobiology is your thing, biology), and they have less maths than physics.

As for learning maths, you just need to find the right teachers/tutors. After barely passing tenth grade maths and leaving school for several years, when I went back to finish twelfth grade, I got a high distinction* with help from a tutor :) And now I have a science degree - majoring in, uh, Museum Studies, granted, but I've done astronomy subjects and got high distinctions on all of those, too.

* 85 or above. I scored 88 in maths, and in the astronomy subjects I've done at uni, I've got 86, 89, 91, and 98.

I constantly struggle with thoughts that "I'm not smart enough." I think it's great that you've found something to inspire you <3

I think this sometimes too, but not about Batman. It can help a lot, to think of the strength of a fictional character. When my Grandpa died last year, I took it REALLY hard, but to get myself through I reminded myself to be strong, like Beckett (from Castle) and it honestly helped a lot.

using genius billionaires as motivation never works for me, but i'm glad it does for you, op.

Fantastic! I'm in a somewhat similar situation, so good luck to you! It's gonna be hard but I hope you can achieve your goal!
