IA. I don't like how the "third game" always has to get random pokemon from previous gens and a shit ton of legendaries. Is it really necessary?

I laughed at "des grelots, des ouvre-boîtes" and "la couette ronflex" and "les mouchoirs grotadmorv" and "ET PAS LE MOINDRE OISEAU" and "CREATEUR DE L'UNIVEEEERS" and well pretty much the entire top 20. Pas mal, pas mal.

Nobody is forcing you to catch every Pokemon you come across, though. It's not like more variety = higher encounter rate.

Pretty much this. I mean, Why bother? What happens if you DO catch them all? I think in the earlier Gens you may have seen Mew or something...

I've a finished Blue lying around and as far as I recall Professor Oak congratulates you and you get an in-game diploma.


...Thinking about it, my teenage self might have been a teeny bit disappointed back then.

Exactly! I mean, if you like being a completionist, then that's part of the fun for you. I personally enjoy catching them all. But if you don't want to bother and you'd rather just enjoy the story, you can do that too. That's part of what makes Pokemon fun. :D

I KNOW but I was in high school when Pokémon came out in the 90s and I watched the cartoon a lot so now I just have GOTTA CATCH 'EM ALL on the brain, so I feel like I really have to complete the Pokédex for some reason even though half the Pokémon out there are totally useless

Loosten up dude! RPGs have options so that you can do whatever is the most fun for you. :D Heck, if you still want a challenge but catching them all gets repetitive, you could do Nuzlocke, which actually limits how many you can catch. :)

So don't catch 'em all. Catch the ones you want, or find a challenge you want to do that limits/directs what you catch, and don't sweat the rest. I don't think the game's counted your catches for more than bragging rights since Gen 1 (and the remakes).

I usually don't play any more without some kind of rule on what I do/don't catch because you're right, it does get overwhelming to have 21437899013427894317094981+ options (out of only 650 Pokemon), and I'm lousy at making decisions for myself about what I do/don't want.

Same here. :( It's gotten to the point where I prefer to play romhacks and do Nuzlocke runs on emulators than to play with my own actual, physical games.

Echoing the "just don't catch them." I'm not using anything but my starter for now. But in the meantime it's nice to see more than just Patrat and Woobat in the wild.

The only time I came close to catching them all was filling up the Hoenn dex on my copy of Sapphire. I love having the variety available, though.

Well, I'm going to deviate a bit from the other commenters in this thread in that I feel the need to catch 'em all (or at least a shit ton of them) because I don't really like trading between games much because I feel like a loser when I trade to myself too often (christ, I sound like a friendless bum) and to get the ones I do want (i.e. older generation Pokemon on the newer games), I have to catch 6500640654 Pokemon before I get the dex that will allow me to even attempt it. And, considering that I hate the aesthetics of the majority of the newest generations...yeah, I feel 'ya, OP.

That stopped being the slogan ages ago.

But, it sure gives us a TON of pokemon to play with if you're like me and like making up different teams all the time for replays.

I suspect "pre-endgame" is the operative phrase here, but in case you mean "that's way too many Pokemon for one game": I disagree. I like being able to play the game multiple times over and be able to use different Pokemon every time.

But I think you're referring to Pokemon that you can't catch during the storyline of the game that suddenly become available only after the completion of the main story. In which case, I agree, it's bothersome if you're trying to catch them all (but good for the purposes of catching, breeding, and replaying the game with those Pokemon).
