i like how you used the death star as the image here since it makes it easy to bring up that one time the empire killed billions of innocent people theoretically under the empire's protection on alderaan because some rebel leaders were from there

If the Empire was actually shown doing a relatively decent job of ruling and only really cracking down on the rebels, it would be one thing. But I really don't see any way of justifying that sort of destruction.

The only eyewitness we have to the destruction of Aldera'an by the Empire was Leia, a character who Has An Agenda. How do we know that the story we have been presented isn't a fabrication of hers?

Even aside from the destruction of Alderaan according to the EU the empire is canonically specieist and sexist in a big way and quite possibly racist, since in the films they're all white (though that's a stretch since so are the rebels but still). Living under that regime would only be fun if you had the good fortune to be a male human. :3
