I agree, especially about Fergus' role! I mean people can dislike Merida, but I still feel that this is one of the rare occasions in which saying "she's just a teenager" is a good way to look at her character and isn't just an excuse. It's not an excuse because she really was terrible, and we ARE meant to get that from the movie. But in the end she does learn and accepts her fault.
