But Joan Watson isn't Watson anymore. It's just the name Watson slapped onto a woman. Stripping the character of military experience and her medical license takes away major parts of what has ALWAYS made Watson, Watson. There'd be a lot less people having issues if they'd a) kept Watson history the same or b) decided to just make it a new character.

HEY you seem to have forgotten that that secret was YESTERDAY

in a completely different post even

Are you posting after taking your Ambien again??

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-07-10 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
'cmon fauxkaren was implying that we didn't support Watson being cast as a woman when really I'm pretty sure everyone from yesterday's thread would have have been flailing about Liu!Watson if TPTB hadn't stripped her of her military service.

Though I think original anon was being pretty unfair to fauxkaren to begin with.

i d t s

also I'm not arguing about this here BECAUSE IT WAS YESTERDAY, THE POST IS STILL THERE TO ARGUE IN, but I have to laugh at anyone who thinks that Watson's military service is ~A CRUCIAL PART OF THE CHARACTER~ There were like one or two throwaway mentions of it in the original ACD novels and it had zero to do with Watson as a character in any way. It's just been played up in recent adaptations -- especially, and suspiciously, the BBC one -- because it is cool and gives woobie Watson a chance to experience PTSD.

"Sherlock Holmes experts" around here sure do have a very selective memory that seems to skip right over anything that isn't Cumberbatch and that other guy :333

Anyway, the furious tears are delicious, simply delicious, and I welcome them for years to come. and in before locked.

You really haven't read any of the original stories or watched any of the other adaptions have you? I could give a shit about Watson having PTSD, I do care about the fact that Watson's military history and ability to stay calm in dangerous situations is incredibly important in many stories.

Also people can talk about whatever they like wherever they like. I'm sorry your poor trollish brain can't handle dealing with serious issues without flying off the handle or being gross.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-12 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
>> implying someone is being gross

>> writes multiple posts being ageist, misogynistic, and ableist

Actually, weapon usage was uncommon among non-criminals in ACD's books, so Watson's military service was constantly brought up in his owning and using a pistol, as well as his steadiness, lack of nerves, and general willingness to go into dangerous situations. There's really no way to know whether the military changed Watson because he's left the military when we meet him. So, yeah, you're not too familiar with canon yourself.

I personally think it is played up because of the recent war in Afghanistan. It's a pretty clear correlation between that and the war in the books and explains his having a firearms license (or not. I'm pretty sure Watson wasn't supposed to have a gun in ACD but still had it from his time in the military).

Wow, that was a pretty gross comment. An anon addressed someone faukaren brought up in a nice civilized way and you throw around "har har you drugs that has you fucked up" remarks?

I mean would you like me to say shit like "Hey you posting without taking your meds again?"

"har har you drugs that has you fucked up"

LMAO have you ever taken Ambien? Us merry band of brothers often lament how we end up browsing on it because of the posts that result. Calm yourself.

Maybe you need to TAKE YOUR KLONOPIN

I don't think that's actually true, possibly same anon? I don't feel like Sherlock really did much with Watson's military experience other than the pilot episode (and his psychosomatic limp was completely gone after that, of course).

Not to say that you don't have the objection to it for that reason, but most of the vitriol I've seen is based on the fact that Lucy Liu somehow removes the gay from Sherlock/Watson and oh god a woman, let alone a POC woman getting in the way of our queer baiting programming!

I'm waiting to see how the lack of military history plays out. It'd have been nice to see an example of a WOC solider on the television and I am curious as to why they felt to make the switch, but I'm not going to cast it out completely.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-11 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not the same as grudgey anon, but I wanted to address the point.

The thing you have to remember is that for some of us we aren't just comparing this to Sherlock. We're comparing this to all the different Holmes adaptions and going "but why is the military background suddenly gone when its a woman Watson?"

And maybe you need to hang out in different places? Because most of objections I've seen and heard have been about them radically changing Watson's history in a way that's sort of insulting. The only time I see the "But ewww a girl" stuff is from people defending Elementary.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-07-11 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
I specifically remember us talking about mouse Watson being an active doctor and a veteran.

I've seen the "ew a girl/POC" reaction pretty much everywhere. I've seen a few reasonable points about the erasure of her military background, which I am also considering and still wondering why that decision was made.

I think it's hard on both sides of people that are reasonable to continue to recognize reasonable arguments when they're bombarded with ridculous ones.
