The manner of their transition from Republic to Empire is very sketch. Charismatic dude seizes power for himself to serve his own ends? Hmmm...
The murder of the Jedi in the process of that takeover basically amounts to exterminating all of the members of a religious sect.
Then there's the supernatural/ideological aspect, which basically amounts to controlling huge amounts of people through fear, domination, and the Dark Side of the Force rather than giving them a say in how they are governed.
Of course, this all depends on if you consider the prequels canon--if you don't, then disregard.
