Sometimes I wonder this about the Nightrunner series by Lynn Flewelling, and I really think that her strong online presence on places like LJ and whatnot might be a deterrent for fans to do their fannish thing. Is the author of this series known for hanging around in fannish places?

Yeah, he's the biggest fanboy ever.
He actually posted on his blog one he found a slash drabble of his characters and he may have left a comment there (it was anon, so not sure if it really was him or someone pretending). Haha he was so proud!

But I dunno if this is the reason for the lack of fannish activity, there are other fandoms with very involved actors or whatever that have a lot of activity (and creepers sending them links to nc-17 fics xD)

I always go around stanning for this series and reccing it up and down! No idea why it doesn't have an active fan community. Pat Rothfuss is such a cool guy, too.

I love the first book, but the second has proven impossible to find where I am, and shipping rates on online purchases are more than the book itself... dammit. But I'm glad there is lots of love for it!

LOVE THESE BOOKS. And Pat Rothfuss is totally rad. You gotta appreciate a guy who is a complete and utter geek about things.
He once said on his blog that he wanted to make enough money to buy the rights to Firefly and gift them unto Joss Whedon.

Are we reading the same book? I tried to read the first one. I really did. It started off well and I was interested in what was happening with the strange creatures. And then the main character started to tell his whole fucking back story. And it was so boring. It was all about how awesome he was at everything, how everything came so easy to him. About half way through the book I stopped and started to flick through it to check when the back story stopped and the plot continued. But it didn't, the whole book was back story. I just stopped there. I still haven't finished it. I just could not get over how much of a gary stue this guy was.

Maybe I'll try again. If only because my brother got me the 2nd book for my birthday. Maybe it'll get better.

Can someone please explain the appeal of these books? All my friends are pissing themselves over them, but I found them utterly horrible. I can't get past how super speshul the main character - he's good at everything he tries right of the bat, he has super shiny weapons, is super good looking and mysterious, everyone loves him (with the exception of a very characters who he then one-ups and proves how awesome he is), and he even has a super special name that linguistically doesn't fit with the rest of the world. All the other characters are epically flat too and I've never seen more runon sentences in a book. It's legit the author just wanking out his 13-year old fantasies onto the page and connecting it all with some terrible writing skills.
