I was doing some research for you and it looks like quite a few books in the urban-fantasy genre feature native American of half-native American characters. (Here's a short list : http://bookeracy.blogspot.com/2012/01/sff-stories-with-native-american-leads.html?m=1 )

'American Gods' is the only Gaiman book I've read. I... liked it(?). I think. I really only read two types of books- hard sci-fi and Margaret Atwoood- and I don't really like fantasy elements very much. So, I'm not a very good judge on where to start with Gaiman. I hope you like it!

Patricia Briggs' Mercedes Thompson series is on this list, and I highly recommend it. The latest book (or at least, the latest to come out in paperback) left me a little grumpy, but you get to learn about Mercy's past and I liked it for that, if nothing else.

But, uh, yeah. I second their recommendation.
