A number of years ago I saw a thing on... Oprah? about this. They had as a guest a woman who had contracted HIV from a boyfriend she had in her 50s or 60s.

It's a combination of an "STDs are only a problem among young people" misconception, assuming condoms are unnecessary when the woman is post-menopausal but forgetting that they are not just for birth control, and people who are divorced or widowed after decades of monogamy - and who may not have even been sexually active before marriage - suddenly back to (or for the first time ever) having sex with new partners and they are just not used to thinking about STDs because it wasn't an issue in their lives for so long.

But yes, old people have sex. Those who disapprove are free to take vows of chastity once they reach a certain age, I'll be over here, laughing.
