he didn't ruin any plot developments, the only thing i think he ruined was his and possibly korra's own character development? but iirc korra was pretty willing to step aside and let him be with asami after episode 7.

he didn't so much as ruin anything than his constant personality change made things weird.

Character development is tied into plot development. The two are not mutually exclusive.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-15 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
except he didn't ruin any plot development.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-15 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
So you're saying he didn't ruin any character development as well?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-15 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
not really, no.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-15 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Good for you.

I...don't think those were personality changes. Mako has a lot of different traits, and they only come out under certain situations. He's overly serious and controlling of things, because he's had to take care of his brother most of his life. But when there's no need for him to be the protector, he loosens up and lets the real Mako shine. The guy who does cutesy things like wink at his opponents or make silly jokes like "looks like you're having some car trouble", or the goofy kid who rubs noses and plays with his little brother in the pool. He has a one track mind, and goes to whoever needs him most.

I think that partly comes from all of his attention needing to go to child!Bolin. It's something he's brought into his young adulthood, and it's something he needs to work on (Broadening his scope of attention. Which is why I'm so happy he's a cop, it should force him to learn some lessons on that!)

Mako is a very subtle character, and it took me a second viewing of the series to see all the things I missed.

A second viewing of the series made me realize the subtle hints towards Mako having antisocial personality disorder. He manipulates people in ways that are beneficial to him, but does not seem to develop any real emotional feelings for them.
Take, for instance, Asami: he is kind and overly affectionate to her, but when she loses her wealth he becomes detached because she is no longer beneficial to him. He then becomes kind and overly affectionate to Korra, whom previously he was distant to, because, let's face it, she may not offer financial stability, but she's the Avatar - an individual with a lot of power and clout, so she's like the next best thing.

Clever, Bryke. Clever.

I...what? He doesn't lose interest in Asami because she lost her money. He was doting on her up until Korra was kidnapped (Or are you purposefully forgetting the part where he screams at Tarrlok to let Asami go in episode eight?) and thought she was dead.

But you just made me realize the one and only flaw Asami has. She's passive aggressive. Ah.

I was being tongue-in-cheek. And wow Asami stan, Asami had more flaws than that. For instance, she was emotionally very flat.

Being un-emotional isn't a flaw.

Unless you're pointing out a perceived flaw in her writing - but that's not the same thing as a flaw in her character.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that that's not really a flaw in her character. I just felt like calling the person who keeps on randomly bringing up why they dislike Asami when defending Mako an Asami stan.

I wasn't talking about the part where you called them an Asami-stan...I was talking about the part where you said that being "emotionally flat" is a flaw.

Well, I needed to come up with a reason (it wasn't a very good one) to call them an Asami stan. They said that Asami had no flaws except that she was passive aggressive so I was pretending that they were suggesting that Asami was ~flawless. It probably didn't work. I'm tired.

I wonder how the hell Asami is supposed to be passive aggressive anyways? It's like she directly confronted Mako about his feelings for Korra and she directly confronted her father. How is that passive aggressive?

I think you're talking to me about something entirely different from what I was originally talking to you about.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry. Last part not directed towards you.
