the ones saying he ruined plot development, for one.

That would be a critique of his writing, not his character, but I kinda think he did get in the way. The love triangle detracted sfm from the rest of the show - plot, character development, relationship development, pacing, action, everything. And that whole clusterfuck was fueled by Mako being an idiot.

Yes, Korra perpetuated it at first, but then she backed off. Asami didn't do anything except have a relationship with someone who later screwed her over. Mako's actions perpetuated the drama for episodes on end.

Also, his relationships with both Korra and Asami severely got in the way of either of them developing meaningful relationships with other characters, and Bolin got totally shafted in favor of his brother in regards to screen time and character/relationship development as well.

Basically Mako kind of ended up being the center of everything and sucked a lot away from the other characters/the team/the whole show.

Thank you for perfectly formulating my thoughts. It's not that I dislike Mako in himself (even with his idiocy), he just happens to symbolize everything that stopped LoK from being great.

Doesn't help he was only called out on his behavior by Asami... and that's it.

Yeah, and even then she didn't really follow through with it. She decided to be all tough girl once and...that was it. It's like they wrote that scene for drama factor and not because of anything it might do for Asami's character (or Mako's).
