Many college classes use tests (rather than projects and whatever) to determine most of the grade (I've had many classes where the only thing that determined your grade were tests) and some people just don't do well with that style of learning. I don't think that means they aren't intelligent. And intelligence isn't just determined through academic means and how well you do on tests, though I will concede that society places a great deal of emphasis on that aspect.

If you're implying that the system put in place to recognise and grade intelligence is doing a hamfisted job of it, then you're implying that a variable (ie, intelligence) is being ill defined.

So, what is being defined by college degrees? I call it "intelligence". If we call it "intelligence", even if it might be not the empirical intelligence you seem to think can still be there without grades, then it still shows that degrees matter and, without one, you're still thick as shit.
