I was born in '86, same as you, and I have memories from '89. I have even more from '90, remembering with some vividness the release of big songs from that year (Madonna's "Vogue", Wilson Phillips' "Hold On"). Heck, I can remember the release of a few songs in '89, too. Some people have better long-term memories than others, and if you have a strong association with particular things, you're more apt to recall them.

I don't know what your friend from '88 is going on about, though. I have a hard time seeing how she could remember things from before her second birthday.
