Agreed, especially on the first one - although she didn't necessarily have to face him alone. I saw a suggestion that it would have made a hell of a lot more of a statement if Asami had gone with Korra to face Amon, not Mako. Yeah, we'd lose the showdown with her father, but it would have done two really great things - a) showed the Equalists that there were non-benders willing to stand with benders and vice versa, and b) Asami was a formidable fighter that didn't rely on bending.

If you're going to fight someone who is hell-bent on starting a war between benders and non-benders, a bender and non-bender working together sends an extremely powerful message (and a non-bender who can fight is proooobably better to take to a fight against someone who can block bending, than someone who's dependent on it. Just saying).

For the whole airbending thing... who knows if that would have still happened, but Asami still would have made more sense than Mako.
