(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 09:56 am (UTC)(link)There's a "better to be dead than disabled" vibe throughout the movie - especially the end when Jake Sully gives up his human body to be one of the aliens - that bugged me more than any of the other reasons people have for not liking it. But then I'm disabled myself so that's why that issue pinged with me more than the other reasons. And okay I suppose it's a fair point that most of that vibe came from characters other than Jake and those characters were the bad guys in a number of different ways. AND it's fair to point out that someone like Jake - who was disabled later in life, ending his military career, rather than being born with those disability - might be more likely jump at an opportunity for cure for his disabilities - even if it meant giving up his human life. Still - it bothered me how quickly he went for it... it's the "but of COURSE everyone would want to be cured!!!!!" thing... no not everyone would.
Other people tend to hate it more because of the race and gender issues - and there seem to be more people who hated it for those reasons. Which is really a trend I've noticed - that often disability issues do seem to be largely ignored in favor of race and gender issues. I suppose race and gender issues might be easier to discuss in many ways, but still... it bugs me.
