I like Mako because he's flawed. He's the jerk with a nice heart under it all. He has room to grow, and he tries to help people. Just single mindedly, and it gets him into trouble. He's does fun little things like wink at opponents and make dorky jokes. I love characters that aren't perfect. It adds flavor.

There's also the fact that I don't see what he did as severely as the rest of the fandom seems to. I don't see a kiss happening a week or so after he started dating, started by another woman, to be as serious as people do. Maybe if they had been dating for six months, or a year, or had been married with children. Sure. But not a teenage relationship that hadn't even hit the one month mark. I just can't. It's too silly.

I understand you're reasoning for liking him cause he's flawed and honestly I agree underneath everything he does have a good heart. A lot of my problems with him come from the writing. That, even though he does these hurtful things to the people he cares about, he never really seems remorseful about it. Like him getting mad that Bolin told Asami about him kissing Korra rather than him just straight up apologizing and at least attempting to explain himself.

The kiss also didn't bother me so much as that Mako kept dragging out the relationship with Asami instead of ending it when he realized he had feelings for another, in addition to continually telling Korra how amazing she was behind Asami's back. I would have had a lot more respect for Mako if he had cleanly and honestly cut things off with Asami instead of staying with her while pretty much actively pursuing someone else.

That's pretty much it. His utter lack of remorse and his half-assed apologies are some of the worst parts about his character, because the writers either didn't notice or expected the audience to not care or assume that it's there when it isn't.

Exactly. It's one thing to be a confused teenager and being torn between two people when you have feelings for both but it's another when you seem to show no guilt whatsoever at hurting either of them. If you don't feel guilty but justified at your actions in that case than you're a big fat jerk.

Asami and Korra should have both given Mako the finger and gone to Hawaii together. Bolin can come too. But only if he brings Pabu.

What's the point in saying you're in an exclusive relationship with someone if they can't honor it? The whole gradient of time making it more serious thing is just...bizarre. If you started dating someone and within a week they were kissing other people, would you EVER be able to take that relationship seriously? Honestly.
