I have a theory that once Peter got over being crestfallen about his Animagus form not being charismatic megafauna, he learned to enjoy the amazing things he could do as a rat. Rats can gnaw through just about everything, squeeze through a hole the size of a dime, climb any vertical surface that's just a bit rough, jump a yard in the air, swim for a half mile in open water, fall 50 feet without hurting themselves, and eat practically anything organic. And of course, Peter could disappear and hide in plain sight for twelve years.

Actually, Peter would've been the ideal Secret-Keeper if it weren't for the teensy-weensy detail that he was working for Voldemort.
