Incidentally, my favorite antidote to when I get despair-y over the fact that Civil War came into existence and permanently (unless it's tossed into discontinuity or retconned) wrecked the Marvel comics fandom before I even had a chance to get into it, is to go read MightyGodKing's "I Don't Need Your Civil War". It is so hilarious that it almost makes the story worthwhile (or it would if Civil War had been retconned until it was pulverized out of continuity and into a joke-event summed up as "that thing that no one talks about on pain of temporary death" like The Crossing).
Honestly, if Civil War was an Elseworlds- or What If-type story, I would adore the shit out of it the way I adore "My Immortal" because of the "there but for the grace of god" factor. Also, SO MUCH potential to mock everything, from the plot to the characterization to the pretentiousness of the idea to the possibility of having "Let's take a poll on which fight had the highest ratio of sanity-to-melodrama!" discussions, with no pain attached due to it not being canon.
