This. My fandom days started in 1995, and all the text fics a person could find were super old files people had pulled from mailing list archives. I remember buying an HTML book specifically so that my AOL page looked like everyone else's.

Anime fandom was wanktastic as hell at the time, lol. (Trek fandom, too, but that was nothing new for it...)

I was in Hanson fandom. It was a surprisingly unwanky fandom for a fandom made almost exclusively of teenage girls. I mean, once you got over the, "YOU want Taylor? WHAT!? TAYLOR IS MIIIINE" drama. I've heard that the Nsync/BSB fandoms were a bit more drama llama, but I didn't hang out in those fandoms.

I mean, I'm trying to remember any instances of wank that didn't entail claiming ownership of a brother, and I just really can't. Of course, we didn't have Twitter/Tumblr/Facebook at the time.
