Re: Online piracy =/= lending/borrowing
(Anonymous) 2012-07-18 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)Yes your friend can do whatever she wants with the CD. She can make a copy. She can make a hundred copies. She can even destroy the CD if she wants.
However, making a copy of the CD may or may not be illegal. In some countries, making one copy for back-up is okay. In other countries, making any number of copies is not illegal. In yet other countries even making a personal backup - especially if the CD is protected by DRM - is illegal. It depends on the laws governing where your friend is at.
> I don't agree that it's illegal. At all.
This is fine. You are entitled to your opinion. There are laws governing where I'm from that I do not agree with either.
> She owns it and lets me rip it for myself. If that bothered her, she'd tell me to fuck off and buy a copy myself. But since SHE owns the CD, it's not illegal. To me and to many other people.
Just because you don't think this is not illegal, and just because many other people don't think this is not illegal either, doesn't make it legal. Only your country's copyright laws dictate whether ripping another person's CD is legal in your country or not.
