Speaking as someone who misses the Venoms, I can understand how you feel. Still, I don't think it's hopeless -- there are some talented people around these days too, and good movies pop up once in a while.

OP here, sorry for being late (damned time zone!)
You might want to check Infernal Affairs mentioned by anon below, especially the first movie (it's a trilogy), Confession of a Pain, Young and Dangerous movies, and if you want some comedy mixed in try God of Gamblers movies.

If you want a movie with Chinese martial arts instead of gunfights, try Ip Man, Bodyguards and Assassins, and some Jet Li's older movies like The Legend of Fong Sai Yuk and Once Upon a Time in China :)

Those are all great movies, but I especially second the recommendation for Confession Of Pain! (I'm a big fan of both Tony Leung and Takeshi Kaneshiro though, so perhaps that has something to do with it.)

i don't watch a lot of chinese movies, but i'm familiar with tony leung through some of wong kar wai's movies. probably my favorite director. no matter what i could say about his films, it wouldn't do them justice. they're all amazing, but my personal favorites are 2046 and in the mood for love.

Yeah, the last Hong Kong action movie I felt inspired to watch was Infernal Affairs which was literally a decade ago. Maybe there'll be a revival? Who knows...

Well, it's under chinese control now, which means chinese censors, so yeah, there's probably going to be a downturn in creative talent. On the other hand, maybe the film producers will move to Taiwan and start it up there.

Which is why there were no good movies made after 1997? Actually the Hong Kong film industry does not fall under the mainland's censorship control. To take an extreme example, some of my coworkers would take weekend trips to HK to see 3D porn films on the big screen.

It's not an immediate thing, but slowly, as they solidify their control, they can exert more pressure, give subsidies to the ones that agree to be subject to more and more guidelines, etc. China's not an easygoing kinda government when it comes to people saying things they don't like.

Porn will probably still be available, but any movie with themes (or hints of themes) that the government doesn't like will come under increasingly tighter restrictions.
