I know the show doesn't celebrate Michael obnoxiousness, but the fans do. I know he 'mellowed' out towards the end, but he was still a ridiculous asshole at time.

That man did not deserve Holly. As soon as I saw they were end game I had to stop watching. RAGE.

I'm the anon of the comment you're replying to (didn't mean to be anonymous, whoops) and really? I'm not in the fandom, but that reminds me so much of HIMYM fans with Barney (guys, GUYS. Repeat after me: Barney is for laughing at, not for laughing with. The Bro Code is not to be quoted unironically. ) The fact that they're taking a type of guy like Michael or Todd Packer, the kind of person who's usually doing the mocking in a (bad) comedy scenario, and mocking them is the best thing about The Office imo, but I can understand if his obnoxiousness, ironic or not from the show's perspective, would be too much for a viewer to take.

The thing is, I have been a fan of the Office for a long time and I had no idea there are people actually siding with Michael. What. the. Fuck. Guys. Seriously.

I would have thought it was painfully obvious that Michael is meant to be laughed at for his stupidity.

I agree with your comments, Checkerblob. The tone of the show is much more *mocking* towards bigotry. But I think that one of the biggest keys to Michael's character is not that he is (or WAS, I haven't watched the show too recently but I seem to remember him growing at least somewhat as a person) a bigot, but that he's just so damn CLUELESS about human nature. That's what ultimately leads him to make these ridiculous comments that are gross and bigoted. As you pointed out, he thought that some sexist comments were going to help him connect with the warehouse guys - he thinks that's what they wanted to hear. But then he just ends up looking like twice the ass: Once because he's being a sexist pig and once because they can tell he doesn't really believe what he's saying - he's just trying to suck up to them.

I've known people like Michael, and I HATED them. And yet, his complete and total lack of any kind of rudder is what makes him *human*. Don't get me wrong - he's totally gross - but can't we all relate to that at least a little bit? Wishing that some group of people in your life liked you more, but feeling like you just have no fucking clue what in the hell they want from you? The point of the show is watching him make tiny gains in the tact /decency department...and then watching him totally screw it all up and make it worse, and THEN watching his co-workers show that they are good human beings by being kind to him even though he doesn't really deserve it (except for the fact that he's still a human being and all human beings deserve some basic level of kindness). He's a deeply flawed character - that's the point. That's what makes him, and thus the show, interesting (to some people). I love Jim and Pam too, but they are the ones that you are supposed to love. It's easy to love them.

Michael did mature a lot from the beginning of the show (which was also part of the retooling to make it less like OFFICE UK), and yeah he did love his office friends, but his small mindedness drove me nuts.

Yes. Still bitter about him and Holly. Holly deserved better than him. (and i don't care. Jan/Michael will always be my OTP for that show)
