Since when is olive skin not white?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Since always, where I'm from. The only people around here I've ever heard called or call themselves "olive skinned" have been Latino or biracial.

I've always heard of it referring to tan guys, usually from europe.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-18 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
yea, where I'm from its anyone who doesn't have translucent pale skin.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-18 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Huh, that's not at all how it's used here. TIL. Thanks.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-18 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
TIL?

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-07-18 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
I think it means "Today I Learned".

As have I. I've always heard of 'olive skinned' being a darker, tan skin, but still being white.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-18 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
Mostly for people from Italy and Spain. And there are a lot of Spanish roots in most Latino families.

This is what I was thinking - like a darker-than-"white" Mediterranean complexion.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-18 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. Mostly, Spain, south of France, Italy, sometimes Portugal (even though Portugal faces the Atlantic) and people from the North of Africa are also included.
You could come from these places and be as white as a lily though.

Greeks, Jewish people, Italians, I could go on but there are plenty of people out there who have darker complexions but are considered white. Granted, they weren't always considered white, but they are now, so figure it out. (The whole history of which groups of people get categorized as "white" and which don't is a subject I've been fascinated with for a long time and read extensively about, maybe because people are fucking stupid and often assume me and my mother aren't white based on how we look -- mostly our hair and skin color -- and I have had to deal with that shit along on top of the whole 'guilt due to white privilege' my whole life so... you know, it's personal to me.)

*hugs you*

Can 100% relate to this.

Have the exact same problem as you, but the opposite. I get a lot of people thinking I'm white because I'm extremely light-skinned - and subsequently, a shit ton of SJWs accusing me of having white privilege and "speaking over PoC" when I attempt to engage in discussions concerning people of color. I'm not white, though, I'm biracial, and I personally think it's pretty obvious from my hair and facial features that I'm not white. So, I feel your pain. You get a lot of "LOL Y U SO BROWN", and I get a lot of "LOL Y U SO WHITE".

I have olive skin and i would be considered white. Most people from the mediterranean are considered olive skinned.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-18 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
"olive skinned" is also used to describe some italians, jsyk.

Yeah, I grew up associating "olive-skinned" with Latino or light black people. Then again, I've sometimes seen what I eventually realized were POC described as "tan" when none of their color came from chilling on the beach, so descriptions are just some fuckery sometimes.

I've only ever heard of Mediterranean whites referred to as "olive skinned". Italians, Greeks, etc.

This. My husband is part Italian -- he's naturally olive skinned and tans pretty dark in the summer. Our kids have inherited a somewhat lighter version of his skin tone, and both tan pretty dark in the summer. My youngest? Black hair, olive skin, gray-hazel eyes -- when I picture Katniss, I see an older, more female version of his coloring.

Ohgod. He's four. I dread the day when he's sixteen.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-18 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
It can be white, but POC can also have olive skin which is why only allowing white actresses to audition for Katniss is pretty damn sketchy.

(And there's plenty of white adventure heroes and heroines, so casting an olive-skinned, black-haired POC actress probably wouldn't be that horrible towards olive-skinned white people.)
