The LOTR movies were the only films I ever went to see with my father (eh, I dimly recall him taking me to a couple of Disney films when I was <7 yrs old, but definitely the only once since then). I remember the whole family - my father, me, my two siblings - driving over to see the second and third ones as a post-Christmas treat two years running. He died last year, and I don't have that many good memories of him, so. I guess I'll end up seeing The Hobbit with new friends but now I'm tempted to fly back home and go see it with my brother and sister.
