Someone with olive skin and black hair being white is not sketch.

I definitely would love more diverse casting but um, yeah. Hi from a white person with olive skin and black hair. ...Though a lot of people have asked me what ethnicity I am and then refuse to believe my dad is British and my mom is blonde & blue eyed. I've had people try and let me know I'm probably adopted. X(

That's freaky, because this is exactly the case for my best friend: olive skin, dark brown hair, and parents of the same description as yours. But...yeah.

OMG I am not alone! :)

Nah, not just you. my mom is green-eyed, dark-haired-olive skinned. She gets asked if she's Italian/Greek/Spanish frequently. And I came out pale, freckled and strawberry blonde. My hair did darken (it's a think in my family), but honestly, when they handed me over to her at the hospital she actually asked if there wasn't a switcheroo.

Sorry, can't edit anon, meant to say it works the other way around too. It can happen in families with a lot of genetic mixing. And the real joke is, my dad is actually of mixed ancestry but he's much whiter than my mom.

I'm the only one in my family with green eyes, dark coloring, and no freckles. Or at least we thought that about the green eyes until we found out I had heterochromia and the yellow rings and pigments just made my blue-grey eyes appear green.

It's funny because my mom was adopted and looked just like her adoptive family and that always surprised people when they found out but everyone assumes her biological child isn't hers!

Those fuckers. They think they are doing you good by telling you such things. I've had people tell me that my sister cannot really be my consanguine sibling, because she has fair skin, blue eyes and light hair (after our mother) while I have olive skin, dark hair and very dark brown eyes (after our father). What do those people try to achieve when they try to "enlightlen" a 10 year-old kid this way is way beyond me. The fuckers.

I've had some pretty nasty fights with people I didn't know very well because it really offended me that they thought they had a right to tell someone that whether or not they thought it was true. I have no idea why people would ever think it's a good idea to say that.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I picture someone with Mediterranean heritage when I hear olive skin. That's still "white", right?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-18 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Spanish and Italians are white. Having a tan doesn't change that

[personal profile] lovelycudy 2012-07-18 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes.

ayrt

I phrased what I was trying to say poorly. I meant that it's sketch to see a character described as having olive skin and black hair and then explicitly ask for white actors to fill the part. Sure, you can find white people with that coloring, but it's definitely not an exclusively, or I'd say even primarily, white complexion.

This is a statement I totally get behind. Olive can mean white, but it can also mean a lot of other things, and acting specifically for white actors? Sketch. Definitely sketch.

Agree.
