(Anonymous) 2012-07-18 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)Thing is, we are also dealing with health issues in the household that may necessitate a service dog in the potentially near future. I'm deaf, but haven't needed a service animal because I can function pretty well on my own; I'm all about better living through high technology, bedshakers, lamp signalers, etc., etc.
However. I may soon be the primary caregiver for an ailing parent, who is literally not going to have the breath to yell loud enough for me to hear (ditto bells and whistles); if I'm concentrating on actively listening, I'll hear/possibly be able to identify Random Noise #11100000 in my creaky old house, but if I'm distracted (or even worse, asleep) there's no way.
I did read one site that said Borders were good working dogs, and some have been used as service dogs; thing is, I also don't have the $25K required to go through the Lions training with one (I'm hoping I will be able to find the cash for a purebred Border), or the time, as the official process includes being off work for months, which is completely out of the question. So I was hoping the (alleged) work ethic of the breed would lend itself to DIY/customized training.
There are no other pets or children in the household, and for the time being, the dog will be on its own from about 7:30am to around 5-5:30ish (no I can't take the dog to work with me, as it would not "officially" be a registered service animal). The only other concern would be, just how hypoallergenic is the breed really? I've got serious chronic rhinitis, and am always battling to keep the dust, etc. at bay. Also, if you can recommend a breeder in the Canadian Maritimes (who is willing to ship), me love you long time, Internet.
Am I asking too much? Feel free to flame on, if I am. :-(
