I feel like this gets thrown around way too easily in fandom sometimes...but in this case it's damn hard to ignore. It's one thing if she's not your fave, but to hate her actions and excuse Walt's? UH...

We get to see Walt's story, and we come to empathize with him. Skyler then serves as a block and obstacle to the protagonist, but in a reasonable enough way that she becomes frustrating. I think the hate is excessive and misogynistic as well, but I can understand where it comes from.

Can't get into Marie, though. To each their own.

We may have empathized with Walt in the beginning, but we shouldn't anymore. He had many chances to just walk away and didn't. And, then, he did ruthless, terrible things that went beyond the nature of the business, beyond protecting his family (which he wouldn't have had to protect in the first place if he had walked away from cooking).

Skylar is right to reject him, right to be afraid of him. I think people who can't see or ignore that Walt is the bad guy are missing the point entirely. And, they are probably misogynistic jerks.

I like to think that people who over-the-top hate were probably held hostage by their love of Walter that they forget that he chose to be the shittiest husband of the year(s). Because Skyler not wanting to put up him and the constant lies? Even when he was given multiple openings, or different routes to take over his hubris? Yeah, fuck that. She's completely justified.

Oh gosh, a BB secret, and my favorite kind! And no, OP, people hate Skyler because they're ridiculous. She's flawed, but she hasn't killed hundreds of people because of her egotistical mid-life crisis like Walt.

Admittedly, I didn't like her around season 1-2 when she didn't know what Walt was doing and was being a douche to him. But I've since come to love the hell out of her and appreciate what a bad-ass she can be.

The frustration? Because she's the one Walt has please, and part of the reason his life is in such a mess (or so he feels - really, the mess is of his own making, and she offered him any number of ways out).

There is a lot of misogyny that goes into Skyler hate. Not always -- as I said below, I think there are good reasons to at least find her annoying in the first two seasons and I think that's somewhat intentional -- but the people who look at her "cheating" on Walt (after she'd already told him their marriage was over and also OH RIGHT HE'S A MURDERING DRUG DEALER) or her actions cleaning up after Ted's mess and scream about what a shrill scheming useless harpy bitch she is? Yeah.

I really disliked Skyler for the first few seasons - and no it wasn't because of my "internalized misogyny" as everyone here is claiming it must be, it was because she was fucking irritating and not a very sympathetic character. I think it's easy to dislike her in the first few seasons because she is more of an obstacle than anything, and you really feel for Walt initially because he is doing everything for his family whereas it seems like Skyler is almost trying to stop him (unknowingly, obviously).

After she actually found out what was going on I still thought she was being kind of a bitch to Walt but I definitely stared to sympathize with her more. Later on I think she becomes a much more sympathetic character, and Walt becomes less sympathetic and almost despicable (IMO anyway - I really don't like him though I think as a character he is amazingly written). At this point I totally feel for Skyler (especially after that last episode... yikes)

No, it's true -- she's a very frustrating and often irritating person in seasons one and two. But the people who are still hating on her and criticizing her actions in seasons three and four (and now five) are just baffling to me. I mean, I hated her in season two, but after season four, I fucking adore her.

Skyler has done some really shitty things, BUT Walt is much worse.

They're both compelling characters and I love this show to pieces. You can sympathize with both, but also realize they're both very flawed.

Just wanted to clarify that I totally realize there are legitimate reasons to dislike Skylar (although I myself am pretty fond of her). I mostly just don't get the frankly over the top hatred that I've seen come from some people. I've lost count of how many times I've seen her called a cunt or a stupid, ungrateful bitch because she doesn't forgive Walt for everything he does. The fact that some people can vehemently hate Skylar and yet not acknowledge that Walt himself is also very, very flawed is just frustrating to me (and it also seems to be missing the point of Walt's character)

I like her too. I wanna say "people are sexist", but I wanna give em the benefit of the doubt (I literally JUST CAUGHT UP with this show so I'm unaware of the fandom, I've been keeping out from spoiler-fear) and I've gotta assume that a lot of hate for her is because it's Walt's story, mostly, and for a good while there she was either directly on his trail or pissed at him for doing what he's doing. By this point though, the show is definitely writing him as an all-out Villain Protagonist and I think sympathy for her is gonna go way up

(and whatever, man. I'd say Jesse is so totally my favourite he's pretty much my heartbeat at this point)
