Secret Transcription

How did you even make this, dood?

I told a fan of this series that I didn't beat this game--there was just too much grinding.

He was confused. Apparently it's the least grindy game in the series.

I don't think I'll ever play another Dragon Quest.

Thanks for this. Hard-to-read secrets make me cry.

OP's apology

(Anonymous) 2012-07-21 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry--these secrets really don't look that blurry in the editor! They always look a bit more blurry when I look at them before sending them, and if I don't clean them up well enough, then they get horribly blurry when they're posted. (Maybe I need a better editor, or maybe I just need to try some new fonts.)

GIMP is free, so try that. Use white text with a black border or vice versa. Preferably don't save as jpg. All that should help a lot!

A simple black (or other contrasting colour) bar beneath some white (or other contrasting colour) text works fine.

Plus, if you're worried about the image being concealed so much that the fandom is unidentifiable, just list the fandom so technocase will write it down :)

God bless you.
I wasn't even going to attempt decoding that.

I haven't played DQ9, so I don't know if that's true or not. That being said, Dragon Quest is a pretty grind-intensive series on the whole, so if you didn't care for all that grinding, you might want to give the rest of the series a pass.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-20 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm towards the end of it right now, and... yeah, it's a grindfest. The fact that each job with each character has to be ground from scratch (e.g. if you change somebody from a Lv20 warrior to a priest they'll be at Lv1, and there's a rubber banding with the XP gain such that lower level characters gain less experience from the same battle) makes job hopping a nightmare; yeah, you could just set up twelve characters (one per job) in the inn in Stornway and swap them whenever you need or want a change, but UGH.

Hmmm. :/ And the skills don't transfer over to the next class either, correct?
Edit: And here's hoping that didn't come off as snotty. I genuinely don't know.

Some skills do, some don't. Unspent skill points do carry over, though, making job hopping one of the easier ways to level up one skill tree.

wtf does 'grinding' mean in the context of video games?

just having mental pictures of someone grinding the console with their crotch :S

I lol'd.

Level grinding. Fighting enemies for exp. to increase the levels of your party members.

After people praised DQ8 so much I just knew this series wasn't for me. It's ok OP, RPGs are very variated nowadays, in some cases they even make grinding fun by having a good battle system.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-21 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
I adored DQIV, heart and soul. I played it last month for the first time. As a present from my bf, he got me DQIX. I really don't like it--the fact there are no companion characters, the fact that you have to relevel all of them if you don't like your party make-up is excruciating. It's such terribly bad design that I'm boggled it's the best rated game in the series.

It isn't as grindy, this is true, but the grinding that exists just isn't as fun. And as someone who did not grow up on 8-bit or 16-bit games in their youth (just 64-bit polygon in 3D), I really vastly preferred the art style of DQIV. I felt DQIX was bland and forgettable. I despise the JRPG fascination with absurdly large heads. Maybe that works in art-form or sprite-form, but definitely not in 3D form. At least, without going whole-hog and making their bodies absurdly tiny in response, e.g. Wind Waker. DQIV was much more colorful, lively, and I played through it like a fiend.

I keep waiting to feel connected to DQIX. It's just not happening. Seriously, OP--give DQIV a try. As someone who doesn't like grinding either, I really enjoyed the game.

I barely had to grind at all in Dragon Quest 8. In fact, the only time I did have to grind was when I trying to complete a side quest the instant it became available.

People who don't like grinding in jrpgs
You're the people who give jrpg players a bad name

I am serious, grinding is part of the fucking game, or at least it should be. If a jrpg is nothing but a bunch of cut scenes it's fucking worthless, it should've been an anime instead. Having a good battle system that makes grinding fun is a sign of a quality rpg

I don't understand why you thought I wasn't serious? I though this was a pretty prevalent opinion

I agree, but that's not what you said. You said people who don't like grinding give JRPG players a bad name. Does it really matter what someone likes to play as long as they're enjoying a game?

[personal profile] billybobfred 2012-07-21 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, with turn-based RPGs, your choices are pretty much "grindfest" or "boringly easy". It's hard to make a fun game with that system.
