It's weird that the site says it doesn't allow rape but has a non-con section, but...

For some people, the actual word "rape" is a trigger, and authors use the term "non-con" instead. And while rape is non-con, non-con is not necessarily rape (non-con can also be used to cover things like non-consenual kissing and fondling and any other act that falls short of actually being rape)

And other people use "rape" and "non-con" to distinguish between two different types of stories. Often, "rape" will be used to describe a fic in which the rape is not made "sexy" and it's not supposed to be written to arouse and titillate. "non-con" is often used when the fic makes the rape the kinky part of the story, and something intentionally meant to arouse the audience

That's the distinction I'm familiar with, too. Although, as a survivor who has no trouble with rape fic on most days, but is triggered as fuck by non-con unless I'm in a really good headspace, I find it weird that there are archives who allow non-con fic, but not rape fic.

I am not the OP. Thank you for this breakdown of terms. I write non-con. I consider non-con and rape to be synonymous, but if I tag my fics that way, I'll end up scaring off readers who would like what I do and/or attract readers who will hate me afterwards.

Put a better way: I have no problem with saying that non-con is fucked up, but I don't want to use the word 'rape' if it's going to make people think I'm writing about rape as a concept. Maybe some better tags are necessary.

I've heard of people using the term "rape fantasy" when they want to write about the act in a sexual/kink way and don't want to delve into the ramifications or anything like that.

I'm not into this myself but my impression is that people who like what you do are used to it being a hit-and-miss experience. They know where the back button is.

Yeah, rape brings to mind a horrifying account of actual events where as non-con has a more fantasy-ish connotation (same as dub-con since if we strip the fantasy from it, it's pretty much rape too.) I generally check my brain at the door and turn on the kink receptors when I read non-con/dub-con. But when I see a story labeled as rape I pay attention and try to understand the respect the survivor. It is very unlikely to get me off because of that.
