Dry Ice

[personal profile] trollometer 2012-07-20 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I've created a new measure just for you. Dry Ice feels like it's burning (like your skin is On Fire) when really it's freezing your cells because it's so cold (Subzero). You worded your secret in such a way as to cause wank, but cleverly so, and are thus deserving of a Hot to On Fire rating. However, your choice of subject is so repellant and humorless as to deserve a Subzero rating. (Especially your image choice.)

You've want us to stop calling fictional rape "noncon" because it's wrong and demeaning, yet you slide in that you've written "noncon" yourself and don't have a problem with it because it's fictional, after all. The hypocrisy is astounding, and I question your target. Writers and readers of noncon who also champion and offer support to real life victims of rape? People who say rape isn't anything to joke about while also maybe writing noncon, reading noncon or supporting sites that archive noncon?

We've discussed that rape=noncon before, so what's your point? Are you not satisfied with our lack of kink shaming or are you legitimately trying to foster discussion about rape scenarios in fic?

I am so glad I made you steampunk.

OP here

(Anonymous) 2012-07-21 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, just call it cold. So far, I haven't seen any actual wank in the comments.

I admitted I've written stories containing rape because a): it would be a major omission if I didn't admit it, and b): I don't want to sound like against the very existence of rapefic. I think it doesn't fit with the desired atmosphere of many archives, so I can support eliminating it from those particular archives, but what I really want is consistency and honesty. (I think I've been honest in what I've written--for instance, I never portray raped characters as forgiving and falling in love with their rapists.)

Re: OP here

Eh, I did say "in such a way as to cause wank." I can't help it if the lube is a little dry tonight.

There is not much consistency in fandom definitions. It's the nature of fandom to be fluid, ever changing and, at times, inconsistent. That's why when we have whole threads dedicated to defining 'BNF' or attempting to distinguish between dubcon and noncon we can get dozens of different answers.

Honesty has nothing to do with it, especially in your example. People do fall in love with their rapists in real life. I'm sure you've heard of Stockholm syndrome. In fiction, for some, this may be a thematic kink and it's not dishonest to portray a fantasy.

But, honesty has even less to with anything in the sense that rape and noncon are usually (but not consistently) seen as two different concepts in fiction. Thus, an archive can disallow rape while allowing noncon and still be internally consistent. Whether you think their definitions are appropriate is of no consequence.

So you're saying that the archive is saying "we don't want any realistic or angsty rape stories, but will still allow some noncon," and not making a "we don't think certain things qualify as rape" statement.

I dunno, I think there's a valid point the OP's making. 'Rape-kink is just a kink and ok in fiction, but trying to play the whole "it's not rape-rape" thing when classifying your rape-kink fiction is something different.'

It's like... writing a character that's a bad person is one thing, but if I then in real life said "that person isn't bad and the things he did weren't so bad," people might take offense.

There is a difference between the way rape-as-violence fic and rape-as-titillation fic are written, though, and as someone who is triggered by one of those things and not the other, I really appreciate that authors make a distinction. I agree with OP that it's stupid to try to pretend an archive that allows "non-con" doesn't allow fic including rape, but I also really don't want people to start calling all fic that includes sexual assault the same thing.

Oh I can totally see the literary distinction between the two, and the justification for it. I mean, triggers aside, the person wanting the naughty "Ooh, no... but yes" story isn't looking for the "fully explore the ramifications of rape" story, and vice versa.
